El cuento sucede en un castillo de un rico terrateniente, a donde ha llegado sin así planearlo un viejo amigo, al que no veía hacia mucho, el general Browne, recién llegado de América, en donde había participado en la guerra con Estados Unidos, camino a algún lugar se decide a visitar el Castillo que le ha llamado la atención, y se encuentra con su amigo, que le invita a hospedarse con él, ya que está celebrando una fiesta con muchos visitantes, pero no tiene para él más que una recámara alejada de la casa, a la que llaman "La cámara de los tapices".

Emprisonnés au château de Torquilstone, ils sont délivrés par le roi Richard qui reçoit l'aide de Locksley, le mythique Robin des Bois.

All'inizio della vicenda, Scott dice che essa si colloca "verso la fine del regno di Riccardo I"; poiché Riccardo stesso compare nel romanzo, di ritorno in Inghilterra dalla Terza Crociata dopo la prigionia passata dal duce d'Austria; pertanto i fatti si collocano attorno al 1194. Le tematiche trattate sono molteplici e complesse.
