When we reach the end of ourselves—at the very bottom of the "sea" of our despair—God is not distant but is present to bring us back up and save us from our sinful ways. Jonah correctly sees the fish not as a place of punishment but as a womb of grace, where the Law does its work of crushing his Old Adam and the Gospel raises him up as a new creature who joyfully confesses, “Salvation is from the Lord.” Through his experience Jonah then becomes a type of Christ himself, who came near to us and dwelled among us so that he could die, spend three days and nights in the earth, and then be raised for the salvation of both Jews like Jonah and Gentiles.
