  • Unit 731 with Jenny Chan
    2026/01/20
Unit 731 was a covert biological and chemical warfare research unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that operated during World War II, primarily in occupied Manchuria (modern-day China). Established in the 1930s and led by General Shiro Ishii, the unit conducted horrific human experimentation on thousands of prisoners, including Chinese civilians, prisoners of war, and others labeled as “subjects.” Victims were exposed to diseases such as plague, cholera, and anthrax, subjected to extreme temperatures, vivisection without anesthesia, and weapons testing—all in the name of military research. The experiments were carried out with complete disregard for human life and remain among the most brutal atrocities of the war. After Japan’s defeat, many of those involved were granted immunity by U.S. authorities in exchange for their research data, allowing numerous perpetrators to avoid prosecution. Today, Unit 731 is remembered as a grim symbol of wartime cruelty and the dangers of unethical scientific practices. Guest co host Jenny Chan from Pacific Atrocities Education and James talk about it and why we need to not forget!
