Jonah 1:4 NLT: But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart.

Sometimes God will throw a storm into your story. The storm was not a coincidence. The storm was intentional. The Hebrew word hêṭîl—translated "hurled". Means more than just "sent." It implies "to cast," "to hurl," or "to throw down" with force and intent. It means a deliberate and powerful act of God, unleashing the storm directly upon the sea.

We have been conditioned, especially in church culture, to believe that God uses us despite our weaknesses. In the Gospel of John alone, this all important name, spoken by Jesus, is repeated seven times. Jesus repeats the words “I AM.” In this repetition we see the fullness of His character. We have a tendency to see ourselves as we are... BUT GOD sees us not as we are, but as He has called us to be!

Matthew 5:8 (NLT) God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.

When Jesus used "pure/clean" (katharos), Jewish listeners would immediately have thought of all the purity laws in Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy. In the religious culture of Jesus's day, purity laws dominated the Temple worship. They identified religion with rules which had to do with cleanness and uncleanness... Jesus identified religion with the state of a person's heart. Jesus was radical.

We live in a world that is wired for distractions to avoid feeling pain. If your heart stops "feeling" the weight of your sin or the brokenness around you, that thing has something wrong with it. We often fill our lives with busyness and entertainment to numb the ache internally. Mourning isn't just for funerals; it’s about a heart that is soft enough to be saddened by what saddens God.

Matthew 5:3 NLT: "God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs."

We are taught to build our "spiritual resume" with good deeds and moral behavior. Jesus isn't talking about being "a little bit humble." He’s talking about being spiritually bankrupt. You don't get into the Kingdom by bringing something to God. You get in by admitting you have nothing to bring. In the Kingdom of God, if you are overqualified (full of yourself), you are disqualified.

Mathew 5:6: God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.

Hunger and thirst can be summed up as Desire! Jesus used language people in this day would understand.... We don’t know much about being hungry and thirsty. And yet internally we are dealing with desires.... Hunger and thirst in a much deeper way. To hunger and thirst shapes much of our life!
