    2020/01/31

We're ringing in 2020 with a throwback to the Roaring 20s, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald! | SPOILER ALERT! As always, we will discuss spoilers in this chat. If that's not your thing, no worries. Come back after you read the book! | "The Great Gatsby is a novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald and first published in 1925. It follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream."

  • The Cuckoo's Calling
    2019/11/27

What's better than getting cozy on the couch with a blanket and a good mystery? That's how we spent our month reading The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (AKA our queen JK Rowling). | SPOILER ALERT! As always, we will discuss spoilers in this chat. If that's not your thing, no worries. Come back after you read the book! | "After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he's living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry -- known to her friends as the Cuckoo -- famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this."
