  • Who Will the Washington Commanders Take in the NFL Draft and Speculating on Alex Ovechkin's Future

    Coming of a 5-12 season in 2025 — but only two seasons removed from an NFC Championship appearance — the Washington Commanders have a specific position of need on each side of the ball in this year's NFL Draft.

    With only six picks to work with, sports reporter Liam Griffin joins George Gerbo to narrow down who the Commanders could target with the seventh overall pick in the first round — with a focus on edge rushers as well as a wide receiver to line up opposite veteran Terry McLaurin — while also identifying potential targets for Washington in rounds 3-7.

    The two also discuss the future of Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin's playing career after the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer sent mixed signals over the last month about whether or not he will return for a 22nd season.

    The Defenders season begins March 28 at St. Louis, with the home opener at Audi Field two weeks later on April 11, one of five games in the District this spring.

    Just ask Stacey Allaster. The chief executive of professional tennis at the USTA and U.S. Open tournament director is a lifer in the sport. Even though she didn't play it at the highest level, she's led it from those same heights, earning her this year's USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation's Tennis Creates Impact Award.

    Allaster will receive the award at the Tennis Creates Gala, Dec. 6 at the Salamander Washington D.C., the USTA Mid-Atlantic Foundation's signature fundraising event.

    On this edition of District of Sports, Allaster joins George Gerbo to discuss the honor, her lifetime experiences in tennis, including leading America's Grand Slam through a global pandemic and elevating it to heights, as well the surging state of the sport after the emergences of stars such as Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka.
