On May 31, 2026, Dr. Emily K. Cabrera, EdD, MSN, CAGS, PMHNP-BC, joined Phil George on WCRN for a public-friendly conversation exploring nutrition, identity, and emotional wellness across the lifespan.

The discussion included the Ketogenic Diet and how dietary patterns may influence energy, mood stability, and cognitive clarity. They also referenced the documentary Food Matters to highlight broader questions about how modern food systems impact health and wellbeing.

The conversation shifted into the psychological and emotional layers of identity, including why individuals may experience feelings of “less-than” and how self-worth is shaped by internal beliefs, comparison, and life experiences. Mid-life transitions were discussed as a natural developmental stage where people often reevaluate purpose, fulfillment, and personal direction.

An example was shared from the life of Elvis Presley, illustrating how even highly successful individuals can feel disconnected from their authentic preferences, including pursuing work that does not fully align with personal enjoyment or values. The discussion emphasized awareness, reflection, and intentional change as tools for navigating these life stages with greater clarity and self-compassion.

  • Paperclips & Periods Podcast 6.10.2026: Financial Stress and Shame
    2026/05/30

In this episode, Dr. Emily K. Cabrera, EdD, MSN, CAGS, PMHNP-BC and Katie Krych, MSN, RN, PMHNP(c) explore what it means to carry shame around money and why that silence can quietly shape so much of a woman's life, her choices, her relationships, and her sense of self.

Money is one of the last things women feel permission to talk about honestly. Not because the feelings are not there, but because shame has a way of making people go quiet. This episode names that silence directly and asks what it would look like to start telling the truth about money, not to fix everything at once, but to stop carrying it alone.

The conversation opens with where money shame comes from in the first place. Long before we were adults making financial decisions, we were children absorbing money scripts, the unspoken rules and beliefs passed down through family, culture, and circumstance. Messages like "we don't talk about money," "there's never enough," or "wanting more is selfish" do not disappear when we grow up. They run quietly in the background and shape behavior in ways that can be hard to trace.

From there, they move into the real cost of that shame. Financial stress is not separate from mental health. It activates the same stress response in the body as any other ongoing threat, and when shame is layered on top of it, it becomes even harder to look at clearly or ask for help.

They also discuss what shame resilience actually looks like in practice, including how to do a financial audit without judgment, what values-based budgeting means when it is used as a clarity tool rather than a restriction, and why saying a financial truth out loud to one safe person can be a more meaningful starting point than any spreadsheet.

The episode closes with an introduction to financial therapy as a legitimate and growing field that sits at the intersection of mental health and financial planning, along with practical guidance on how to find a financial therapist and what to expect.

It ends with three reflection questions for listeners to sit with: What money story did you inherit? Where does shame show up for you? And what financial truth has been waiting for some air?

  • Paperclips & Periods Podcast 6.5.2026: Dressed for Who, Exactly?
    2026/05/25

In this episode, Dr. Emily K. Cabrera, EdD, MSN, CAGS, PMHNP-BC and Katie Krych, MSN, RN, PMHNP(c) explore what it means to open your closet and come face to face with every version of yourself you have ever been.

Clothing is rarely just about clothing. The things hanging in our closets carry stories, old identities, bodies we used to live in, and quiet pressures we may not even realize we are still carrying. This episode starts there and does not shy away from how personal it gets.

The conversation moves through the different stages a wardrobe accumulates over a lifetime, from the clothes we wore when we were trying to be seen, to the professional armor we wore because a role required it, to the oversized cardigan in every color we now reach for because it is comfortable and nobody can argue with comfortable. Both hosts get honest about the gap between the woman in the mirror and the woman whose clothes are still hanging there from a decade ago, and what it actually means to hold onto them.

From there, they talk about body image in a way that is real and unscripted. Post-pregnancy bodies, menopause changes, breast reductions, scars, the pouch, the wider hips, the pancake situation, the chin hair. None of it is off limits, and none of it is wrapped in toxic positivity either. What comes through instead is something quieter and more honest: two women giving themselves, and each other, some grace.

They also dig into the question underneath all of it: who are we actually doing this for? When we get dressed in the morning, put on the makeup, shave, style the hair, are we doing it for ourselves or for an audience we invented? The answer, it turns out, shifts a lot as we get older.

The episode closes with a reminder that comfort in your own skin is not a destination you arrive at. It is a decision you make, again and again, in a closet full of who you used to be.

  • Paperclips & Periods Podcast 5.29.2026: When Rest Doesn’t Feel Restful
    2026/05/25

In this episode, Dr. Emily K. Cabrera, EdD, MSN, CAGS, PMHNP-BC and Katie Krych, MSN, RN, PMHNP(c) explore why it can feel so difficult for women to truly rest, even when there is time to do so. While rest is often framed as a simple choice, many women find that the moment they sit down, their minds become more active, running through responsibilities, to-do lists, and unfinished tasks.

They discuss how this is not just about being “busy,” but about the constant mental load many women carry. Expectations at home, caregiving roles, work demands, and the pressure to stay productive all contribute to a brain that stays on, even when the body stops. Over time, the nervous system can become used to this constant state of alertness, making stillness feel uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or even guilt-inducing. The belief that rest must be earned can further reinforce this pattern, making it harder to slow down without feeling like something is being neglected.

This episode offers a grounded and compassionate perspective, helping listeners understand that difficulty with rest is not a personal failure, but a learned pattern shaped by both environment and biology. It encourages small, realistic shifts, reminding listeners that rest does not have to be perfect to be meaningful. Even brief moments of pause, despite a busy mind, still count.

It closes with a simple reflection, inviting listeners to notice one small moment in their day where they allowed themselves to pause, and to begin seeing that as a valid and necessary form of rest.
