  • Sin Crouching at the Door: The Real Story of Cain and Abel
    2026/05/29

Welcome back to Faith in the Holler.

In this episode, Byron and Eric dive into one of the most sobering chapters in human history: the story of Cain and Abel. After sin entered the garden, we see its devastating effects play out in the very first family. What starts as a heart issue with an offering ends in the world's first act of violence.

We take a deep look at Genesis 4 to understand not just what happened, but why it happened, and how the same struggles of jealousy, pride, and "secret sins" still affect us today in the mountains of East Kentucky and beyond.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The Heart of the Offering: Why did God accept Abel’s sacrifice but not Cain’s? We break down the difference between giving God our best versus just "going through the motions."
    • The Warning Sign: How God warned Cain that "sin is crouching at your door" and gave him a chance to turn back before it was too late.
    • The First Murder: A breakdown of the tragic moment between two brothers and the reality that sin, when left unchecked, always leads to destruction.
    • The "Blame Game" Continues: Just like Adam and Eve, we see Cain try to hide from God and avoid responsibility. We talk about the danger of the "Am I my brother's keeper?" mentality.
    • Mercy in the Curse: Even after such a terrible act, we see God’s mercy as He protects Cain from being killed by others.
    • The Mark of Cain: Understanding the consequences of our actions and the weight of living with a "restless heart" away from the presence of God.
    • Finding a Way Back: No matter what you’ve done or how far you’ve wandered, we discuss how the blood of Jesus speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

We aren't here to judge; we're here to walk the narrow road together. If you’ve been struggling with anger or feeling like your "offering" to God isn't enough, we hope this conversation brings you some clarity and peace.

  • Who Was God Talking To? | Creation, Dinosaurs, and Biblical Giants
    2026/05/15

Welcome back to Faith in the Holler! In this episode, Byron and Eric take it all the way back to the beginning. While our previous episodes touched on sin and the journey of Jonah, we felt it was time to focus on the foundation of everything: The Seven Days of Creation. We walk through each day of Genesis, from the separation of light and darkness to the creation of mankind. Along the way, we tackle some of the big questions: How long is a "day" to God? Did dinosaurs exist during this time? And who exactly was God talking to when He said, "Let us make human beings in our image"?In this episode, we explore:The Master Artist: Why Byron compares God’s creation process to a blank canvas and "happy little trees."Day-by-Day Breakdown: A look at the specific order of creation and how science often proves the biblical account. The Mystery of "Us": Using scripture from Genesis and Colossians to explain the presence of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) at the very start of time.Modern Proofs: A discussion on the remnants of Sodom and Gomorrah, the resting place of the Ark, and why faith and science aren't as far apart as people think.Direct Access: How the death of Jesus "ripped the veil," giving us a direct lifeline to the Father through prayer.Whether you're marveling at the stars or the changing leaves in the holler, we hope this episode reminds you that none of this is by happenstance—it was all planned by a Creator who loves you.Connect with us: 🔔 Subscribe to follow our journey through the Bible and stay updated on new episodes. 📍 Visit us: Join the West Van Lear Church of Christ family for Bible study and fellowship. facebook Follow us on Facebook: Connect with our community and see what's happening at the church.“Opportunity is knocking, and His name is Jesus. • The Hidden Meaning of Jonah: What the Whale Teaches Us About Salvation
    2026/05/08

Welcome back to Faith in the Holler! In this episode, Byron and Eric pick up right where we left off—with Jonah overboard and in the belly of a great fish. While many focus on the miracle of the whale, we dive into the heart of the matter: Jonah’s prayer and his total surrender to God.We explore an incredible realization that clicked during our study: how Jonah’s journey in the Old Testament perfectly mirrors the "Plan of Salvation" found in the New Testament. From hitting rock bottom to the waters of repentance, Jonah’s story is a powerful precursor to the life we are called to live in Christ. In this episode, we discuss:The "Belly of the Fish" Moment: Why being alone in a private place with God is often where true change begins.A Prophetic Parallel: Breaking down the symbolism of the water and Jonah’s three days as a precursor to Jesus and our own baptism. The Turnaround at Nineveh: How a "mean and wicked" city responded to God’s message with humility and fasting. No One is Too Far Gone: Why God spared Nineveh and what it means for anyone who feels they’ve strayed too far from the light.Fear vs. Faith: The importance of fearing God’s judgment but having the faith to pick up your cross and follow Him.The "Why" of Baptism: A deep dive into why we lead by example, just as Jesus did with John the Baptist.Whether you're struggling with a "rock bottom" situation or looking for a clearer understanding of how the Old and New Testaments connect, this conversation is for you.Connect with us: 🔔 Subscribe to join us every week as we break down the Word in a simple, relatable way. 📍 Visit us in person: Join the West Van Lear Church of Christ family for fellowship and study. facebook Follow us on Facebook: Connect with our community and share your thoughts on this episode.“Opportunity is knocking, and His name is Jesus.
