In my life, I have failed in leadership multiple times. I wish this were not so, but it is so. I have a dear friend who is a gifted football coach. He has told me multiple times: I have learned how I want to coach football by watching other coaches do it the wrong way. In other words, he was saying: I do not want to coach like them, so I am going to coach more effectively.

As leaders, we should lead with humility. This means we must learn from our own mistakes. Furthermore, we need to learn from others who make mistakes in leadership.

Oftentimes, we are afraid to deal with the hard things in leadership. Therefore, we start sending conflicting signs about what needs to be done. We run away from what is clear. This results in ineffective leadership that communicates with clarity and consistency. This becomes a wreck when the organization and the leadership team are in the midst of change.

My subject today is one of the most important lessons in leadership. While this is so, it is also one of the most sobering lessons about life and leadership. No one is exempt from this lesson. What is this lesson? Here it is, and it is the title of Podcast 86: Leadership Is a Stewardship, and All Leadership Is Temporary. Often, our communication with God is also ineffective and transactional. However, our communication with God should be meaningful and transformative.

The reason I want to do this today is to talk through a few of my own thoughts, but I also believe this will help you consider your own thoughts about these things and also help you consider other things in your life and the world we share together in our time. So here we go…

As many of you know, I am serving in this season as the Interim Pastor of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas — a historic and faithful congregation with a rich legacy of gospel ministry. It is a true honor to serve the people who call Grand Avenue home. This past Sunday, I delivered a message entitled “Jesus’ Vision for Our Life and Church.” While this sermon was prepared with the people of Grand Avenue and the Fort Smith community specifically in mind, its message speaks to every believer and every church. I want to use this episode of the For Leader podcast to share it with you. I invite you to watch or listen and ask the Lord to speak to you through His Word. Therefore, it is imperative that we have a conversation this week about “Walking With The Lord.” Please share this podcast with every Jesus follower you know, regardless of what their occupation or vocation may be.

One of the most important subjects in the Scriptures is our subject this week: “Walking With The Lord.” Colossians 2:6 says, “As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.” A walk with Jesus Christ unfolds step by step and decision by decision. While some parts of this walk are due to God’s activity in our lives, the other parts should be us initiating this walk with the Lord daily. In fact, it should deepen and become even more disciplined as you mature in Christ.
