  • 437. Passive Solar Greenhouses, The Solution to Food Security in Northern Climates
    2026/06/12

VIDEO - Greenhouses in northern climates like Canada that rely on fossil fuels to stay warm often struggle to keep up in the highly competitive food industry.

However, Sadru Nazarali sees Passive Solar Greenhouses as a game-changer for food production in northern countries, potentially transforming how we grow food and ensuring we have enough to eat.

He's part of a group called Egertonians and Friends, and they took us on a tour of the passive solar greenhouses at Fresh Pal Farms in southern Alberta.

His group is bringing six pilot-scale passive solar greenhouses to Canada and four to Pakistan to help demonstrate and teach local food production. In a crazy, chaotic world, the idea could help northern nations create food security and increase the availability of fresh local food.

We toured a large passive solar greenhouse and learn why this is such a game-changer. Even a small 36,000 sq. foot greenhouse in Alberta will pay up to $10,000 in a month for its gas bill.

Passive solar eliminates most of the energy use and makes the production of food much more affordable and competitive.
