Guilt says, "I did something wrong." That can be fixed. Shame says, "I am something wrong." And shame runs everything — your relationships, your work, your ability to hear any kind of correction without shutting down.
I was seven years old in my father's carport when shame got installed. He mocked me, called me weak, did it for entertainment. The message wasn't "that was bad" — it was "you are bad." For forty years, I couldn't hear criticism without the whole body firing back like it was under attack.
This is Episode Six. This is the wound called Shame.
