Christine Banfield’s sister looked Brendan Banfield in the eye at his sentencing and told him she never truly knew him. Nobody did. Joseph Ryan’s mother reminded a Fairfax County courtroom that her son had a face, a name, and a life full of meaning — and Banfield shot his face, soiled his name, and treated his life as garbage. Two families. Two lives destroyed. And the man responsible sat in front of them claiming the system had failed him.

Judge Penney Azcarate sentenced Banfield — a former IRS law enforcement officer convicted of two counts of aggravated murder — to life without parole, plus consecutive time for child endangerment and a firearm charge. The murders of Christine and Joseph Ryan in Herndon, Virginia, on February 24, 2023, were the result of a months-long scheme Banfield devised with the family’s au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães. He catfished Ryan using fake profiles impersonating Christine, lured him to the family home under false pretenses, then shot Ryan and stabbed Christine seven times in the neck. Their four-year-old daughter was in the basement.

The day before sentencing, defense attorney John Carroll filed a motion to overturn the verdict. Three arguments. All denied. Then Carroll announced he would not represent Banfield on appeal. He told reporters his client needed fresh eyes — a polite way of saying there wasn’t much left to argue. Banfield still plans to appeal. The odds of that changing anything are about as low as they get.

Bill Wegerle was a suspect in his own wife's murder for eighteen years. From the day Vicki Wegerle was killed in their Wichita home in September of 1986 until the day in March of 2004 when the actual killer mailed her stolen driver's license to a local newspaper, Bill Wegerle lived under suspicion of a crime he did not commit. His two children grew up under that shadow.

The man who killed Vicki Wegerle was Dennis Rader. The same Dennis Rader who, twelve years earlier, had written letters to the same Wichita newspaper claiming responsibility for the Otero family killings under the name BTK. The same Dennis Rader whose voice was on a 911 tape that had been played on every Wichita TV and radio station. The same Dennis Rader whose 1974 police sketch had run on the front page of the Wichita Eagle.

In the second chapter of host Tony Brueski's five-part Hidden Killers investigation, the file Wichita Police had been quietly building since 1974 gets laid out in order. The Bright family attack. The Otero letter. The Nancy Fox 911 recording. The Anna Williams sealed package. The Marine Hedge case, where Rader killed his own next-door neighbor and went home to bed. The Vicki Wegerle case that did not break open because the BTK task force had been folded into a smaller operation by the time it happened.

This is the second uncomfortable truth of the series. Dennis Rader was not too clever for Wichita Police. The Wichita Police had pieces of him for three decades. The pieces did not get put together. The cost was carried by families who did not deserve to carry it.

Surveillance cameras in Two Rivers, Wisconsin captured Jesse Vang pulling up to the donation door of a St. Vincent de Paul store on February 19, 2024 and dropping off a dark-colored suitcase. He’d borrowed a neighbor’s Nissan Altima. He’d left his phone at home playing a Netflix movie. When investigators tracked down and tested that suitcase, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab found one DNA profile inside. It was Elijah Vue’s.

The next morning, Vang reported the three-year-old missing. He told police the boy walked off during a nap. That story was already being coordinated — Elijah’s mother Katrina Baur sent Vang a message within sixty seconds of the 911 call telling him what to say. She deleted it. Investigators found it anyway. What unfolded over the next seven months was one of the largest searches in recent Wisconsin history. FBI agents, state investigators, community volunteers numbering in the hundreds. They searched landfills, rivers, storm drains, and private property. A $40,000 reward went unclaimed for months.

A hunter found Elijah’s remains in September 2024, three miles from Vang’s apartment, in a wooded area that had been searched before. Forensic analysis revealed injuries that occurred weeks before the child died. Both Vang and Baur face felony charges. Both have pleaded not guilty. Tony Brueski walks through the investigative timeline — the phone data, the surveillance footage, the suitcase, the deleted messages, and the seven-month search that ended in a forest three miles from where it started.
