  • "They're Not Bad People. They're Sick!" | Coach Steele on Prison, Recovery, and Healing
    2026/06/24

On this episode of The In And Out Podcast, we sit down with Coach Darrell Steele, founder of Elevate Recovery Solutions, for a powerful conversation about incarceration, addiction, trauma, mental health, and what it truly takes to rebuild a life after prison.Coach Steele shares his personal journey from growing up in a two-parent household in Oklahoma to battling addiction, serving time in a maximum-security prison, and ultimately dedicating his life to helping others successfully navigate recovery and reentry. This conversation explores why reentry begins on the very first day of incarceration—not the day a person is released—and why so many formerly incarcerated individuals struggle when they return home. Coach Steele discusses the importance of having a support system, the challenges faced by individuals with mental health diagnoses, and why some people remain incarcerated simply because they have nowhere safe or stable to go.Drawing from his experiences as both a football coach and recovery coach, Coach Steele explains why coaching is about seeing the bigger picture, carrying people through difficult seasons, and helping others discover their own capacity for transformation. In this episode, we discuss:• The connection between childhood trauma and incarceration• Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) and their impact on decision-making• Addiction, recovery, and generational cycles of pain• Why incarceration and addiction recovery share many similarities• The importance of community, mentorship, and having a village• Mental health challenges within the prison system• Faith, spirituality, and finding purpose behind bars• The unique struggles facing Black communities today• Why transformation cannot be forced—it must be chosenCoach Steele also shares how the support of his wife, church community, and faith helped him rebuild his life after prison, and why he believes recovery is possible for anyone willing to surrender, seek help, and do the work."If they're still breathing, there's hope."Whether you've been personally impacted by incarceration, addiction, trauma, or simply want to better understand the challenges facing our communities, this episode offers insight, compassion, and practical wisdom for the journey toward healing.Learn more about Elevate Recovery Solutions and the work Coach Darrell Steele is doing to support recovery and reentry.#TheInAndOutPodcast #CoachDarrellSteele #Recovery #PrisonReform #Reentry #AddictionRecovery #MentalHealth #TraumaHealing #FaithAndRecovery #ElevateRecoverySolutionsGot a story? 2026/06/10

In the state of Georgia, there are finally talks of changing legislation to reflect the lesser effects cannabis has on people and society in comparison to other contraband and substances. What will this mean for those who were incarcerated under the previous scheduling?

  • God Saved Me From Revenge, Prison & Death | The Iman Hasan Story
    2026/05/27

From serving over 20 years in prison to building a faith-driven fashion brand in Atlanta, Iman Hasan’s story is one of survival, transformation, and purpose. Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, in a large Muslim family, Iman opens up about growing up around poverty, violence, and instability and how those environments shaped the choices that led him to prison at just 17 years old.

Tried as an adult for robbery, kidnapping, and felonious assault, Iman would spend the next two decades cycling in and out of prison. During that time, he lost both of his parents while incarcerated, survived being shot five times, watched people close to him betray him, and wrestled with the emotional weight of leaving his children behind while serving time.

But this interview is deeper than prison stories.

Iman shares how his connection to God ultimately saved his life — from walking away from revenge to realizing prison may have been the very thing that kept him alive. After nearly losing his life in a shooting tied to street retaliation, he believes God gave him a warning and a way out.

Now living in Atlanta, Georgia, Iman has separated himself from the streets and poured his energy into Iman Apparel, a clothing brand founded while he was still incarcerated. Rooted in Islamic values and personal growth, the brand’s mission is simple:“Where faith meets fashion.”

When someone goes to prison, all of the focus goes on that one individual, but we rarely talk about the ripple effect incarceration has on the connected friends and family. How does prison affect the family, especially when the breadwinner has to leave them behind?
