What if the framework for liberation was hiding inside a physics equation the whole time? Join Dr. Jessica Esquivel (particle physicist, Fermilab scientist, CEO of Oyanova Enterprises, and one of roughly 100 Black women in the US with a physics PhD) and Emily Esquivel (licensed therapist, founder of Oyanova Healing and Chief Wellness Officer of Oyanova Enterprises) as they use quantum mechanics as a framework for liberation, healing, and world-building. Science and healing speak the same language here. For the curious, the tired, the building, and the becoming. Have you ever kept waiting for the right time, the right stability, the right conditions — to build the thing you know needs to exist?

In the first episode of The Quantum Looking Glass, Dr. Jessica Esquivel and Emily Esquivel go back to where Oyanova actually started. Not the website. Not Queer Quest. Before all of that.

It started with midnight musings. Late night conversations between a physicist and a therapist who kept finding themselves at the same intersection — queerness, Black and Brown community, mental health, science, joy — and couldn't find a single space that held all of it at once. So they started dreaming one up.

    Then 2020 happened.

George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. A pandemic that sent them on long walks through their neighborhood because what else were they going to do. Institutions showing their face in real time. And for Jessica, the death of her father — the person they had always planned to move in when things felt stable enough. Watching that plan disappear made one question unbearable: what are we waiting for?

"We don't have the luxury of waiting," Jessica says in this episode. "Life is so damn short."

This is the conversation behind everything Oyanova has built. Jessica and Emily talk about who Oya is — the Orisha, the goddess of justice, of change, of burning it all down so the phoenix can rise — and why her name is in their business. They talk about how a particle physicist and a licensed therapist don't just make sense together, they were always inevitable. Jessica comes at the world like a scientist — seeing broken structures and figuring out how to rebuild them. Emily comes at it from nurturing, from nature, from feelings. As Emily puts it: "Jess will burn it down. And I'll be there to help mend."

They get into their first event — Qubit, held at the Museum of Science and Industry — where they created a space for Black and Brown middle schoolers in the Chicagoland area where queerness, quantum mechanics, and mental health collided for the first time. And the moment that said everything: a Black student raised their hand and asked, "So are you telling us we're all queer?" Not with pushback. With curiosity. Jessica answered with the basics of quantum mechanics — and something shifted in that room.

They talk about what happened at Queer Quest, when therapists walked in saying "this is way above my head" and walked out speaking quantum mechanics — mapping superposition and coherence and decoherence onto the things they see in the therapy room every day. About how the skills a scientist uses to understand a complicated universe and the skills a therapist uses to understand a complicated human being are, it turns out, the same skills. The same Rubik's Cube. The same process.

And they talk about what it means to build something in public when you've spent years moving in the darkness. This episode was recorded before the podcast even had a name. No script. No jingle. No polish. Just two people who have been having these conversations for years — finally turning on the microphone.

"We kind of move in the darkness," Jessica says early in the episode. "But we're trying to come into the light."

This is the origin story. This is what started everything. And it begins, like all the best things do, with the refusal to wait any longer.

    Welcome to the Multiverse.
