Each week comedy writers Gareth Gwynn and Esyllt Sears explore a different month in history – but with a brief stretching from the mid-70s to the present day. Basically, if you could see it, it would be in colour.


It’s politics and pop culture for the eighties, nineties, noughties and beyond, delivered in 20 minute hits because we know what your attention span is like.

So if you remember Westlife but struggle with the Westland affair and if your favourite Aitken was a Tory MP or the one who co-wrote I Should Be So Lucky, we’ve got you covered in this ridiculous historical guide to the information age (even if that information came from a poorly recalled browse of Encarta ‘95).

These weekly episodes are interspersed with interviews with the people who lived through this period to understand whether it has had any bearing on the lives they lead today.

    Gareth and Esyllt's Scrapbook is available NOW on BBC Sounds! This is a brand new show for BBC Radio Wales. In each edition, we'll tackle two years in recent history with archive, music and guests. There are two episodes available now, featuring Josie Long, Sunil Patel, Claudine Boulstridge of Healthy Family Food Ideas and, still to come in the run, Miles Jupp and my (Gareth's) mum. Episode 1 covers 1999 and 1984, with episode 2 featuring 1997 and 1989. Oh and there's clips appearing on Instagram and TikTok too in which my (Gareth's) face is almost permanently obscured. Anyway, to today's episode... May 1992. A dog from a soap opera dies in this one and, honestly, that's not the most miserable thing that happens. I feel like trigger warnings abound for just "miserable stuff" but tucked inside things which sound fun - There's the launch of Wire TV, which you can check out on YouTube after you've listened to the show, and there's the International Space Year 1992 - the poster of which probably has to be seen to be believed. Esyllt Sears and Gareth Gwynn will be joined on-stage by the brilliant Benjamin Partridge of Three Bean Salad and The Beef And Dairy Network to discuss Ben's choice for The Xennial Dome and cover a month in recent history. It's on Sunday 3rd May at 6pm. Come along!
