Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds and his crew aboard the transport ship Serenity provide refuge to Simon Tam and his sister River, a psychic teenager who was experimented on by the Alliance to be used as a living weapon. Marc - A relentless Alliance assassin known as The Operative is dispatched to recover River, as her abilities have inadvertently exposed high-level government secrets. After a subliminal message triggers a violent outburst from River, Mal seeks the help of a hacker named Mr. Universe. This leads the crew to the mystery of Miranda, a planet the Alliance claims is uninhabitable but which River seems psychically linked to. Mikey - To reach Miranda, the crew must sail through territory infested by Reavers—cannibalistic, feral humans. On the planet, they discover a horrifying recording: the Alliance attempted to pacify Miranda's population using an experimental chemical. Marc - The drug worked too well, causing millions to stop eating and simply lie down to die; however, a small percentage had the opposite reaction, becoming the hyper-aggressive Reavers. Mikey - Determined to expose this atrocity, Mal leads a desperate mission to broadcast the recording to the entire solar system. In a climactic battle between the Alliance fleet and the Reaver swarm, the crew suffers heavy losses, including their pilot, Wash. Despite the carnage, Mal defeats the Operative and successfully transmits the data. Marc - Faced with the undeniable truth of the Alliance's failure, the Operative orders his forces to stand down, allowing the crew of Serenity to disappear back into the blackness of space. Other medics take over and soon after a colleague informs her that the war is over, and Claire is seen with a bottle of champagne celebrating with a crowd. MARC- The scene transitions to Claire and her husband, Frank Randall, on a second honeymoon in the Scottish Highlands, a trip meant to help them reconnect after five years of war. It's near Samhain (SOW-un)—Halloween—and they encounter homes marked with blood, which Mrs. Baird, their hostess, explains is a sacrifice to Saint Odhran. MIKEY- Claire discusses her interest in botany while Frank, a historian, delves into local folklore and genealogy, particularly focusing on his ancestor, Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall. While at a vicar's house pursuing Frank's interests, they meet Mrs. Graham, the housekeeper, who reads her tea leaves and palm, hinting at two marriages and an interrupted lifeline. MARC- Later, Frank sees a mysterious figure outside their window who appears to be staring at Claire, leading to a discussion about their past and a reaffirmation of their love. The couple then travels to the standing stones at Craigh Na Dun (CRAYK-na-DOON), where they observe a group of women performing a ritual dance at dawn. MIKEY- A few days later, Claire returns alone to the stones to collect a plant specimen. She hears a loud buzzing sound and, upon touching one of the stones, is transported through time. She awakens in the same location but in 1743. She hears a gunshot and sees a skirmish between British Redcoats and a group of Highlanders. MARC- Claire is nearly sexually assaulted by Captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall—Frank's ancestor—who looks identical to her husband. A Highlander, Murtagh, rescues her and takes her to a group of Scotsmen. MIKEY- Claire uses her medical knowledge to set the dislocated shoulder of a young man named Jamie Fraser, earning their trust. She tries to convince them that she is English, but they are suspicious of her. When they continue their journey on horseback, Claire identifies a location that Frank had told her about and warns the group of a Redcoat ambush. MARC- In the ensuing fight, Jamie is shot. Claire once again uses her skills to tend to his wound. The episode concludes with Claire and the Highlanders arriving at Castle Leoch, where she is presented to the clan chief, Colum MacKenzie. • Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials | Witcher
    2024/05/05
Where is the destiny we need? That's the question Mikey Mason asks in this week's podcast. While Marc Gunn questions the challenges women must face in male-dominated world. Both songs were inspired by episode 4 of season 1, "Of Banquets, Bastards, and Burials". Find out on this week's In the 'Verse podcast #2.8. Revamping Celtfather Podcast, Redoing Pub Songs & Stories Mikey: Mason+Vaughn Project PLOT SYNOPSIS & DISCUSSION (Ripped straight from Wikipedia) MIKEY - So, the thing about the Witcher series, especially in Season One, is that there are several potentially confusing time jumps that have to be tracked. To understand the full scope of these jumps and the impact they have on the story, it's almost necessary to have watched the entire Season. In spite of this, we'll do our best. This synopsis is heavily pulled from Wikipedia, and slightly modified, but absolutely doesn't cover everything that happened in the episode. MARC - In the year 1240, having served the kingdom of Aedirn for thirty years, Yennefer, along with Queen Kalis of Lyria, is ambushed by an assassin. In the ensuing chase, Yennefer flees, unable to save Kalis and her newborn daughter from the assassin. MIKEY - Then, in 1249, Geralt accompanies Jaskier to the betrothal feast of Princess Pavetta, Queen Calanthe's of Cintra's daughter. Urcheon of Erlenwald (also named Duny) interrupts to demand Pavetta's hand through the Law of Surprise, having saved her father's life several years earlier. MARC - The Law of Surprise is an ancient law inspired by European folklore, requiring that someone who is saved by someone else should offer them a boon, the nature of which is often unknown to both parties. For instance, the savior might ask for "the first thing that comes to greet you when you return home," or "what you find at home yet don't expect." MIKEY - Urcheon suffers from a curse that transformed him into a humanoid hedgehog creature. Despite Pavetta's acceptance of the betrothal, Calanthe refuses and a brawl ensues. When Calanthe tries killing Urcheon, Pavetta activates her power, unleashing a maelstrom until Geralt and Mousesack (the druid/mage who serves Calanthe) intervene. MARC - Wanting her daughter happy, Calanthe marries Duny and Pavetta, which lifts his curse. Duny, thankful for Geralt's aid, insists he take a reward. Geralt jokingly invokes the Law of Surprise for something Duny has but does not yet know. The crowd then immediately learns Pavetta is pregnant with Duny's child. They'd been in love for some time. MIKEY - In 1263, Nilfgaard's forces resume their pursuit of Cirilla (aka Ciri), Pavetta's daughter, with Mousesack as their prisoner. Meanwhile, Cirilla and Dara encounter the dryad queen Eithne in Brokilon Forest, while Cahir and Fringilla track Ciri's location.
