In 1795, the fragile peace of the 1739 Maroon Treaty shattered. Trelawny Town, a Leeward Maroon settlement in the Cockpit Country, rose against British colonial authorities after a humiliating flogging incident. Governor Alexander Lindsay, the Earl of Balcarres, brought in 100 Cuban bloodhounds and a force of 200 British regulars to hunt the Maroons through the impenetrable forests. The war ended not in surrender but in betrayal: the Maroons were tricked onto ships to Nova Scotia, then Sierra Leone.
