A show for those who care about the future of farming—and what it means for people, places, and food.

LANDED explores how farms and ranches transition from one generation to the next. That process sounds simple, but it isn’t. Land transfers are complicated, full of economic, legal, and emotional challenges. And they’re important — to all of us, no matter where we live. How farmland transfers, and to whom it transfers, will determine the future of rural communities and the entire food system.

This series takes you to farms and ranches across the country — from pick-up trucks and packing sheds to cattle pastures and kitchen tables. Along the way, you’ll meet a vibrant cast of characters: young farmers who are just getting their start, aging ranchers who are ready to slow down, and advisors who work to support them all. In every episode, we highlight how people are planning for the future of their land — and we show what can happen when they don’t. These grounded, complex stories reveal what it takes to be, and to become, landed.

After high school, Marshall Bartlett left his family’s farm in the Mississippi Hill Country to attend college in New England. He loved working the land with his dad, and he loved Mississippi, but he needed to get away and explore. A few years later, he was itching to come home—but he wasn’t sure how. His family’s farm was a conventional row crop operation, and he wasn’t interested in managing it.

So he started sketching business ideas on napkins. Eventually, he came up with an idea for a regenerative livestock operation. He would rotationally graze his animals, process them in a small plant on the farm, and sell directly to consumers. Check out Marshall’s story and the strategies that brought his vision to life.
