Le 7 juin 2026, jour de l'inauguration officielle du Portail des Nations, plus de 700 personnes se sont réunies pour célébrer cette nouvelle étape de la Genève internationale, en présence notamment d'Ivan Pictet, président de la Fondation Portail des Nations, de Melissa Fleming, Secrétaire générale adjointe des Nations Unies à la communication globale, et de Tatiana Valovaya, Directrice générale de l'Office des Nations Unies à Genève (ONUG), entre autres personnalités.

Un grand merci à toutes les personnes qui ont partagé ce moment unique dans l'histoire de la Genève internationale. Ce reportage donne la parole à : Nadia Schlemmer (Banque Pictet) ; Marie-Louise Roggo (Banque Pictet) ; Danièle Lejoindre, ancienne membre importante du CAGI (Centre d'accueil de la Genève internationale), accompagnée de son époux ; et Stéphane Decoutère, du GESDA (Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator). La mission du GESDA est d'anticiper les futures avancées scientifiques (IA, quantique, biotech...) pour les traduire en actions concrètes au bénéfice de la société. Son outil phare, le Science Breakthrough Radar, cartographie les percées attendues à 5, 10 et 25 ans.

Pour le reste, les visiteurs et visiteuses interrogés ont suivi avec attention l'évolution du Portail des Nations et se disent très heureux de voir un projet de plus de dix ans se concrétiser, à un moment où le monde entier observe le multilatéralisme avec un regard critique, sceptique et ambivalent, du fait des guerres, des crises migratoires et du réchauffement climatique.

On Sunday, June 7, 2026, the Portail des Nations was officially inaugurated in Geneva, with representatives of international Geneva and Swiss and Geneva authorities in attendance, including the Mayor of the City of Geneva, Christina Kitsos. The project, initiated and largely financed by Ivan Pictet, president of the Fondation Portail des Nations, opened to the public the very next day, June 8, with "Together," a brand-new immersive experience inviting visitors to discover the inner workings of multilateralism.

This report takes a closer look at the people and ideas behind that opening, featuring interviews with Awa Dabo, Deputy Head at OHCHR; Gaëtan Roy of the Swiss Evangelical Alliance; Clemens Adams, former Director of the Division of Administration for the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG); Daniel Warner, former Deputy Director of the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID); Anne-Shelton Aaron, a leading figure in Geneva's art world; Bettina Borisch, expert in global health at the University of Geneva; and members of INT Studio, the Geneva-based design studio behind the design of the Clockwork.

Their perspectives trace a line from the diplomatic and institutional weight of the inauguration itself to the broader questions the Portail des Nations is meant to raise — about global health, multilateral cooperation, design, faith, and culture's place in how Geneva tells its own story to the world.

On 7 June 2026, Melissa Fleming, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, together with the Director-General of the UN Office at Geneva and Ivan Pictet, inaugurated the Portail des Nations, a striking gateway dedicated to making multilateralism more accessible through an immersive experience titled Together. The interview took place in the afternoon of the inauguration at the Portail des Nations, conducted by David Glaser (photo : Vincent Albert). The discussion focused on contemporary communication practices and the power of storytelling to move public perception. Themes included refugee experiences and the importance of displacement narratives, including the idea of leaving one’s country with a diploma in hand. Ms. Flemin also recalled the current complex information environment and the importance for the UN to sharpen its ability to communicate – clearly, credibly and meaningfully – with people everywhere. Strong stories and narratives form a broader communication architecture that underpins how the United Nations engages global audiences. The Portail des Nations, future UN Visitor Centre, reflects this same ambition: translating complex geopolitical realities into lived, human-scale narratives. Grateful for this exchange and the moment shared at the intersection of communication, memory, and multilateral storytelling.
