What did Jesus mean when He called His followers the salt of the earth and the light of the world? In this sermon from Gospel of Matthew 5:13–20, we explore Christ’s call for believers to live with a faith that is both visible and transformative.
Just as salt enhances flavor and preserves what would otherwise decay, Christians are called to influence the world through obedience to Christ. But when believers lose their “saltiness”—when faith becomes passive or compromised—their witness loses its purpose. Jesus also reminds us that our faith was never meant to be hidden. Like a lamp set on a stand, the life of a follower of Christ is meant to shine so others may see and glorify God.
This message also addresses Jesus’ relationship to the Old Testament law. Rather than abolishing the law, Christ fulfills it completely, revealing God’s character and leading us to the righteousness we could never achieve on our own. Through faith in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, believers are called to a deeper righteousness—one that flows from transformed hearts rather than mere rule-keeping.
Join us as we discover what it means to live as salt and light in the world, trusting in Christ’s righteousness and walking in the power He provides.
