Mermaid fever had gripped the region decades earlier thanks to another local Connecticut guy name P.T. Barnum who introduced the world to the Feejee Mermaid in the 1840s.   • Doomsday Island in the Connecticut River

The island was once home to DeWitt Terry, A Seventh Day Adventist elder who believed the second coming of Christ, and thus the end of times was going to occur November 5, 1873 (spoilers: he was wrong).
