Welcome to Rice for Breakfast, the unconventional parenting podcast that's stirring the pot on family norms. Hosted by Rebecca, a seasoned play therapist, this show dives into the less-traveled paths of parenting, challenging the "shoulds" and "musts" that society imposes on us. Why settle for cereal when rice can do? Just like Rebecca's daughter prefers rice to start her day, we believe in embracing the unique choices that make our families thrive.

In each episode, we break down the barriers of traditional parenting, exploring topics from the power of play therapy to the beauty of bending rules. Rice for Breakfast is your invitation to a community where different is delightful, and where you'll find the courage to defy expectations.

Are you a parent who dances to the beat of your own drum? Do you question the norms and crave a space where your unconventional choices are celebrated? Then pull up a chair. Whether you're serving rice, cereal, or anything in-between, this podcast is for you. Let's redefine parenting, one episode at a time.

  • Helping Kids Cope with School Changes: Teacher Shuffles, Anxiety & New Routines
    2025/03/13

In this episode of Rice for Breakfast, we discuss the challenges of managing school transitions, including teacher changes, class reshuffles, and leadership shifts. As the school year progresses, children may feel anxious about new teachers, changing class dynamics, or a headteacher transition. Parents often experience stress as well.

We cover how to recognize and manage anxiety in both children and adults, strategies to help kids feel secure during uncertainty, and why school structures still follow outdated systems that can make transitions harder. We also explore how to support children emotionally, validate their feelings, and prepare them for change in a way that feels manageable.

    This episode covers:

    • How school transitions affect children's emotions and learning
    • Ways to support kids through teacher and class changes
    • Why school anxiety often appears at bedtime and how to handle it
    • How to manage parental concerns about school leadership changes
    • Why school systems have not evolved as much as people think

We also share updates about our upcoming book and online course, designed to help parents navigate school life with confidence.
