  • The Mini: Lab Safety
    2026/07/01
Joe, Nick, and Georgia are back in the Basement Studio — well, sort of. Georgia is remoting in from the American Library Association conference in Chicago, and Nick is in his office. Joe is holding down the Basement Studio solo. The band is together in spirit. In Episode 73: The Mini: the RHR crew recaps Part 1 of the Spider-Man villains series: Lab Safety (EP 72) episode featuring Tera Lavoie, PhD, and the ongoing debate over whether Nick should be allowed anywhere near a rock alone.Past guest Lorena checks in with some unfortunate news from Peru, and in Science Holes, Joe brings three stories. A NYTimes story about self experimentation, rewriting what we thought we knew about the human genome, and can we turn back the clock on aging cells. The crew closes out with what they have been watching, reading, and playing, a few upcoming announcements, and Season 4 is officially happening (was there any doubt).Stay curious. • Spider-Man villains part 1: Lab Safety
    2026/06/24
In Episode 72 of Rabbit Hole of Research, Joe, Nick, Georgia, and Mary are joined by returning guest Tera Lavoie, PhD, cell biologist, electron microscopist, and the Advanced Electron Microscopy core facility’s lab safety director. This episode kicks off the 3 episode Spider-Man Villain Series, and we’re starting where it all goes wrong, the lab.It turns out many of Spider-Man’s villains are a catastrophic series of safety procedure failures. Some intentional and some not, but could have been avoided with proper safety training. We dig into what actually makes a safe lab, why those guardrails exist, and the very real, and sometimes very dark, history behind modern research ethics. We also get into DIY biohackers, CRISPR self-experiments, the original Superman’s meteor rock ethics violation, prions, hantavirus, the Radium Girls, Madame Curie’s radioactive notebooks, and whether Nick can lick various elements from the periodic table.Check out what the RHR crew is creatingJoe:Named by the Guild Literary Complex as one of the 35 writers to watch!Red Line: Chicago Horror Stories Anthology featuring a story by Joe!Joe’s Sci-fi physiological thriller Novel: Will You Still Love Me If I Become Someone Else?Joe’s Rom-Com Novella: Tomorrow May Be Too LateEssay by Joe: From Beyond Press: Specific Knowledge: Jotham Austin, II, PhD on Transformations in FictionIt’s Science for WeirdosWant to support the show? In Episode 71: The Mini, Joe, Nick, and Georgia recap Episode 70: Nazca Lines of Peru and Crop Circles featuring guest Lorena Salinas, Peruvian artist and owner of Jose’s Family Restaurant in Highland, Indiana. The crew reflects on the episode’s deeper theme, how culture shapes perspective, and how something small can change your entire relationship to a place.Joe follows up on a comment about fireflies Nick made in a previous Mini and shares some backyard conservation tips from the Xerces Society.Nick talks about a New York Times story about scientists connected to NASA and alien research who have gone missing or been found dead, and the crew talks through the fine line between correlation, causation, and conspiracy. In Science Holes, Joe covers three stories: spinach-derived photosynthetic machinery used as eye drops to treat dry-eye disease, AI and large language models improving brain-computer interfaces for patients with paralysis, and a new preprint on more precise CRISPR “base editing.” This spirals into DNA sequencing, fingerprints, and how your iris is more unique. The crew wraps with what media they are consuming, from the indie horror film Backrooms to T. • Nazca Lines of Peru and Crop Circles
    2026/06/10
In Episode 70 of Rabbit Hole of Research, Joe, Nick, Georgia, and Mary welcome special guest Lorena Salinas, Peruvian artist, architectural drafter, entrepreneur, and owner of Jose’s Family Restaurant in Highland, Indiana, to dig into one of archaeology’s greatest mysteries: the Nazca Lines of Peru.Lorena, born and raised in Peru, shares her unique cultural perspective and walks the crew through the Nazca geoglyphs, and explains why, as impressive as they are, why to Peruvians, the real engineering marvel isn’t what you can see from the air. It’s what’s underground. The puquios, ancient spiral aqueducts still functioning today, represent the Nazca people’s extraordinary engineering response to life in one of the driest places on Earth, a desert that sometimes sees only one rain a year. The crew explores the theories: ceremonial offerings to the gods, astronomical alignments, mathematical precision without modern tools, and the deeply human impulse to create something vast and beautiful that you’ll never fully see yourself. They push back on the alien narrative, not just because the science doesn’t support it, but because attributing ancient genius to extraterrestrials is, as Mary puts it, a way of not giving our ancestors the credit they deserve. From there the conversation shifts to crop circles; their emergence in 1970s England, the Doug and Dave confession of 1991, the 20% of formations that still don’t have a clean explanation, that a plank and a rope can produce. As always the crew dives down many rabbit holes including, Machu Picchu’s earthquake-proof stonework, the German mathematician who dedicated her life to protecting the lines, the Nazca civilization’s rise and collapse, Peruvian food and ritual, the word jerky, 3000 varieties of potato, and a Quechua farewell .Jose's Family Restaurant2934 Highway Ave, Highland, IN 46322 — the only Peruvian restaurant in Northwest IndianaCheck out what the RHR crew is creatingJoe:Named by the Guild Literary Complex as one of the 35 writers to watch!Red Line: Chicago Horror Stories Anthology featuring a story by Joe!Joe’s Sci-fi physiological thriller Novel: Will You Still Love Me If I Become Someone Else?Joe’s Rom-Com Novella: Tomorrow May Be Too LateEssay by Joe: From Beyond Press: Specific Knowledge: Jotham Austin, II, PhD on Transformations in FictionIt’s Science for WeirdosWant to support the show? Were the Nazca Lines ceremonial offerings, astronomical calendars, engineering blueprints, or something else entirely?2) The alien theory gets dismissed a lot, but as Nick points out, it's a hard idea to shake. What is it about unexplained ancient structures that makes us reach for extraterrestrial explanations, and what does that say about us?3) Lorena says that as a Peruvian living in the States, she sees herself as an ambassador for her culture. Is there a culture, heritage, or place you feel that kind of responsibility toward? How do you carry it with you?Future EpisodesThree Part Spider-Man Series to get ready for the new MCU Spider-Man: Brand New DayEpisode 72 – Spider-Man Villain Series 1: Lab SafetyGuest: Tera Lavoie, PhDEpisode 74 – Spider-Man Villain Series 2: Scorpion and the Other ChimerasGuest: Erin C. • The Mini: Hive Mind
    2026/06/03
In Episode 69: The Mini, Joe, Nick, and Georgia recap Episode 68: The Hive Mind, featuring return guest Wes Thorn, revisiting the lively debate over individuality versus collective culture, echo chambers, and whether anyone would actually join the hive. Nick finally watched a few episodes of Plur1bus, but didn’t stay with it. Georgia talks about Alex’s Substack comment on how different cultures approach individualism versus collectivism, and his book recommendation The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, in reference to the discussion on plant consciousness. In Science Holes, Georgia follows up on the previous Mini episode on smart underwear, Nick talks about Colossal Biosciences hatching a chick from an artificially created egg as part of their de-extinction project. This leads to a conversation about CRISPR, epigenetics, and whether a genetically reconstructed animal is really the same animal that went extinct. The crew agrees they see a future gene-editing episode. Joe closes the science holes with a New York Times story and a 2024 New England Journal of Medicine study on cognitive motor dissociation; the discovery that roughly one in four seemingly unresponsive patients shows task-related brain activity on fMRI and EEG, and ties it back to the hive mind episode’s discussion of noetics and non-localized consciousness. The crew closes out with what media they have been consuming: Boroughs on Netflix, For All Mankind, Widow’s Bay, The Mandalorian & Grogu (Have Joe say that 3 times fast), Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed on Apple TV+, and games including Borderlands 4 and Death Stranding 2. And Nick gets homework, name a hive mind video game for next time.Check out what the RHR crew is creating:Joe:Named by the Guild Literary Complex as one of the 35 Writers to Watch!Red Line: Chicago Horror Stories Anthology featuring a new story by Joe!Joe’s Sci-fi physiological thriller Novel: Will You Still Love Me If I Become Someone Else?Essay by Joe: From Beyond Press: Specific Knowledge: Jotham Austin, II, PhD on Transformations in FictionFuture Events to Hang with the Crew:Podcast Cross-AppearancesJoe on GoIndieNow: 21grams with Joe ComptonThe RHR crew on Ben Tanzer's This podcast will change your life: episode three hundred seventy-nineEvents & Conventions:Shore Leave 46 - Lancaster, PA (July 10-12, 2026)Lancaster Wyndham Resort and Convention CenterDragon Con - Atlanta, GA (September 3-7, 2026) - Joe attending as ProfessionalUpcoming Episodes*The Mini will now be every other episode!Episode 70 - Nazca lines of Peru and crop circlesGuest: Lorena SalinasThree Part Spider-Man Series to get ready for the new MCU Spider-Man: Brand New DayEpisode 72 – Spider-Man Villain Series 1: Lab SafetyGuest: Tera Lavoie, PhDEpisode 74 – Spider-Man Villain Series 2: Scorpion and the Other ChimerasGuest: Erin C. • The Hive Mind
    2026/05/27
In the 68th episode of Rabbit Hole of Research, from the Basement Studio, Joe, Nick, Georgia, Mary, and returning guest Wes Thorn (last seen defending the Simulation Hypothesis in Episode 26) dive into one of science fiction’s most unsettling concepts: the hive mind.It starts with a simple question: is the private voice inside your skull really yours? From there the crew tumbles down the rabbit hole of collective consciousness, exploring nature’s original hive minds, bees, ants, slime molds, and the 80,000-year-old aspen grove that is technically one single organism, before asking what science actually knows about consciousness itself. Spoiler: not much. There are 29 competing theories and counting, and researchers still can’t agree on a definition. The crew discusses Apple TV+’s new show Plur1bus, (no spoilers) a show about an alien signal decoded as a genetic blueprint that folds humanity into a single collective consciousness. The crew debates individuality vs. collective good, whether a true hive mind can have a leader (Nick is unconvinced), the Borg’s mythology-breaking queen problem, and what separates a hive mind from a cult.Along the way they get into noetics and non-local consciousness, acquired savant syndrome, yoga philosophy’s concepts, the complexities of fungal networks, and whether the internet is already a proto-hive mind or just a very loud echo chamber. And at the end, everyone has to answer the question: would you join?Come see Joe on several panels at ConCarolinas - Charlotte, NC (May 29–31, 2026 ) Check out what the RHR crew is creatingJoe:Named by the Guild Literary Complex as one of the 35 writers to watch!Red Line: Chicago Horror Stories Anthology featuring a story by Joe!Joe’s Sci-fi physiological thriller Novel: Will You Still Love Me If I Become Someone Else?Joe’s Rom-Com Novella: Tomorrow May Be Too LateEssay by Joe: From Beyond Press: Specific Knowledge: Jotham Austin, II, PhD on Transformations in FictionIt’s Science for WeirdosWant to support the show? What would it take to change your answer?2) The episode draws a line between a cult and a true hive mind. A cult has a leader with a motive, a hive mind has neither. Do you buy that distinction, or like Nick, feel that it’s a technicality?3) Mary brought up concepts from yoga philosophy, the idea that the “you” you think of as yours is actually a collective of everything that came before you. Does that make the idea of a hive mind less scary or more?Future EpisodesEpisode 70 - Nazca lines of Peru and Crop CirclesGuest: Lorena SalinasThree Part Spider-Man Series to get ready for the new MCU Spider-Man: Brand New DayEpisode 72 – Spider-Man Villain Series 1: Lab SafetyGuest: Tera Lavoie, PhDEpisode 74 – Spider-Man Villain Series 2: Scorpion and the Other ChimerasGuest: Erin C. • Saving Earth from Other Worldly Impact
    2026/05/13
In Episode 66 of Rabbit Hole of Research, Joe, Nick, Georgia, and Mary welcome Charles Blue, a science writer with over 35 years of experience in astronomy, Earth science, and science communications. Charles serves as Executive Communications Strategist for NASA’s Exploration Directorate, and has participated in tabletop exercises that simulate real government responses to potentially hazardous near-Earth objects (NEOs).The crew digs into the difference between asteroids, comets, and NEOs, why objects approaching from the sun’s direction are nearly impossible to detect, and how impact risk changes dramatically depending on size, composition, and warning time. Charles walks through the global network of observatories tracking these threats, the communication challenges of telling the public something might be coming, and what those tabletop scenarios actually look like when the cone of uncertainty lands on the place he calls home. From altering an asteroid's albedo, its surface reflectivity, with paint, to kinetic impactors to the politics of nuclear deflection, the crew works through what we can actually do, and how NASA’s DART mission proved that moving an asteroid isn’t just Handwavium. Charles also discusses next-generation detection, and Joe asks about the dangers of asteroid mining liability, and pulls on the Starship Troopers conspiracy thread. The real science of planetary defense is more interesting than anything Hollywood has thrown at us.And yes, we’re looking at you Armageddon.About Charles:Charles is a science writer specializing in astronomy and Earth science. He has more than 35 years of strategic communications experience in science, engineering, and technology.Charles currently serves as Executives Communications Strategist for NASA’s exploration directorate.
