Reality Behind Bars discusses incarceration by analyzing documentaries and reality television. Hosted by a college professor and a formerly incarcerated educator, the show aims to separate entertainment from reality.

Each episode examines popular shows about prison life—asking what they get right, what they get wrong, and what they leave out. Drawing on research, psychology, and lived experience, the hosts explore topics like incarceration, reentry, prison culture, criminal justice reform, and the real human impact of the system.

If you watch prison documentaries, follow true crime, or want a deeper understanding of the criminal justice system, Reality Behind Bars offers thoughtful analysis and honest conversations about the stories we’re told about life behind bars.

  • The Reality of Halfway Houses
    2026/05/28

This week on Reality Behind Bars, Ashley takes a solo deep dive into one of the most misunderstood parts of the criminal justice system: halfway houses. This episode explores what halfway houses actually are, how they function, and whether they truly help people successfully reintegrate into society after incarceration. Ashley breaks down the different types of halfway houses including restitution centers, sober living facilities, and transitional re-entry housing while unpacking the blurry definitions that make researching these programs so difficult. The episode also examines the intense surveillance, strict rules, and prison-like conditions many residents experience, raising important questions about whether halfway houses function more as rehabilitation programs or extensions of incarceration itself. Drawing on current criminal justice research, including recent studies on recidivism, Ashley explores what the science actually says about whether halfway houses reduce reoffending rates and the answers may surprise you. The episode also discusses why public perception of halfway houses is often negative, why reform advocates continue pushing for them, and what evidence-based alternatives could better support successful re-entry. • The Reality of Medical Furloughs
    2026/05/26

In this special episode, Ashley takes a deeper look at medical furloughs in U.S. jails and prisons after the concept appeared in 60 Days In. Inspired by Chris’s temporary release during the series, this episode explores the complex policies behind medical furloughs. The episode covers a basic definition of medical furlough, a brief history of the use of furloughs in the United States, and an overview of the various ways obtaining a furlough is complicated (even if your state has them).

  • Inmate to Roommate S1E4 (A&E, 2022)
    2026/05/21

In this episode of Reality Behind Bars, Ashley and Carolyn break down Inmate to Roommate Season 1, Episode 4, “The Meat Police.”

The episode opens with Nick’s release and arrival at Kyle and Sandra’s home, where strict house rules immediately set the tone. Ashley and Carolyn explore the importance of structure during reentry, while questioning the realism of expectations like securing a job within 30 days. Drawing from lived experience, Carolyn offers insight into the barriers formerly incarcerated individuals face in the job market and why timelines like these often set people up for failure.

The hosts also examine Tiffany’s decision to welcome Ari, who has a history of identity theft, into her life and business. With concerns raised by Tiffany’s friend Quinn, the conversation turns to trust, risk, and the unique challenges of rebuilding relationships when financial vulnerability is involved.

In Indiana, tensions rise as Bill clashes with Mark and Sharna over rigid household rules (particularly their ban on meat). What starts as a disagreement about food reveals deeper issues around control, communication, and mismatched expectations. The hosts discuss how a lack of transparency and empathy can undermine even the most well-intentioned reentry arrangements.

Meanwhile, Dr. Henry and Uncle Joe struggle to guide Darquavion, whose missed job interview highlights a critical gap: the life skills many incarcerated individuals never had the chance to learn. Ashley and Carolyn reflect on how incarceration during formative years impacts emotional development, accountability, and understanding of workplace norms.

Throughout the episode, the hosts connect these storylines to broader systemic issues, including the need for better reentry preparation, realistic expectations, and support systems that prioritize both accountability and compassion.
