  • Law, Righteousness, and True Happiness
    2026/05/07

2 Nephi 2:13 - "And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away."

Elder Jörg Klebingat - "Moral relativists advocate that truth is merely a social construct, that there are no moral absolutes. What they are really saying is that there is no sin, that 'whatsoever a man [does is] no crime,' a philosophy for which the adversary is claiming proud authorship! Let us therefore beware of wolves in sheep’s clothing, who are always recruiting and '[often use] their intellectual reservations to cover their [own] behavioral lapses.'"

Elder Quentin L. Cook - "The prophet Lehi declared, 'If there be no righteousness there be no happiness.' The adversary has been successful in planting a great myth in the minds of many people. He and his emissaries declare that the real choice we have is between happiness and pleasure now in this life and happiness in a life to come (which the adversary asserts may not exist). This myth is a false choice, but it is very seductive. The ultimate noble purpose of God’s plan of happiness is for righteous disciples and covenant families to be united in love, harmony, and peace in this life and attain celestial glory in the eternities with God the Father, our Creator; and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior."

  • Opposition in All Things
    2026/05/06

2 Nephi 2:11 - "For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my firstborn in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility."

Elder Bruce R. McConkie - "Unless there is darkness, there can be no light; unless there is vice, there can be no virtue; unless there is hate, there can be no Iove."

Elder Ulisses Soares - "These trials and tests are part of the plan of happiness of God for all His children, including for those who are trying their best to do everything right. I know that going through trials is not an easy task. Of course, we don't enjoy it. Sometimes our trials can even oppress us to such a point that our spiritual light seems to dim. But it is declared in the scriptures that it is necessary to have opposition in all things (see 2 Nephi 2:11). How could we recognize the sweet without experiencing the bitter? We all can get the strength we need to endure our trials from the Savior and His atoning sacrifice. The Savior descended below all things, so He understands pain and He is aware of our adversities. His heart is full of mercy, and He is always ready to help us in any circumstances. His love and compassion for us are everlasting (see Jeremiah 31:3)."

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland - "Adam and Eve answered forever the plaintive question that is so often heard: 'If there is a God, why is there so much suffering in the world?' The answer to that is we now live in a fallen world filled with opposites, a world in which God is the most powerful but decidedly not the only spiritual influence. As part of the doctrine of opposition, Satan is also at work in the world, and we knew before we came here that he would bring grief and anguish with him. Nevertheless, we (through Adam and Eve) made the conscious choice to live in and endure this mortal sphere of opposition in all things, for only through such an experience was godly progress possible. Adam and Eve—and we—knowingly and lovingly absolved God of the responsibility for the 'thorns and thistles' of a fallen world that was personally chosen by us, not capriciously imposed by him. We wanted the chance to become like our heavenly parents, to face suffering and overcome it, to endure sorrow and still live rejoicingly, to confront good and evil and be strong enough to choose the good. In this telestial, mortal world filled with competing voices, enticements, and experiences, we get a lifetime of opportunity to refine and strengthen these virtues."

  • Standing Before God Justice, Mercy, and Lasting Happiness
    2026/05/05

2 Nephi 2:10 - "And because of the intercession for all, all men come unto God; wherefore, they stand in the presence of him, to be judged of him according to the truth and holiness which is in him. Wherefore, the ends of the law which the Holy One hath given, unto the inflicting of the punishment which is affixed, which punishment that is affixed is in opposition to that of the happiness which is affixed, to answer the ends of the atonement"

Coleen K. Menlove - "In the Book of Mormon, Lehi explained to his son Jacob that happiness is a result of obedience. He told Jacob that eternal laws have both punishments and opportunities for happiness attached to them. When we disobey God’s laws, we suffer the punishments, but when we obey, we reap the happiness. Part of what creates happiness is the absence of regret, guilt, and sin."
