Welcome to Stars of Sacrifice: WWII—the official podcast of Stories Behind the Stars.
More than 421,000 Americans lost their lives in World War II. Every one of them had a story worth saving—and worth sharing.

When a serviceman or servicewoman was killed in action, their family was presented with a banner bearing a single gold star. Stories Behind the Stars was created to ensure those stars are never forgotten by building one central digital home for the stories of the more than 421,000 Americans who gave their lives in service to our nation.

This national effort—researched, written, and financially supported by people who believe the fallen must be remembered—exists to ensure future generations can learn about the Americans who paid the ultimate price for freedoms we too often take for granted.

Stories Behind the Stars partners with genealogy and historical organizations across the country. Through Stars of Sacrifice: WWII podcast, we bring these stories to life on an audio platform—reaching younger generations, those who are able to dream because of the brave.

Press play, and step into the stories of those whose courage shaped the world we live in today.

Like many young men of his era, 1Lt Harold W. Bellard answered the call to serve.
On January 6th, 1941, he enlisted in the New Jersey National Guard in Newark, where he served as a cavalryman.
But the war would soon reshape his path—and his destiny.
Harold transferred into the United States Army Air Forces and trained as a navigator, joining the 68th Bombardment Squadron, Heavy, of the 44th Bombardment Group—part of the mighty Eighth Air Force.
The 44th Bomb Group would go on to become one of the most battle-tested heavy bomber units in the European Theater.

More than 421,000 Americans lost their lives during World War II — but they were never just numbers. They were sons and daughters, husbands and wives, brothers, sisters, friends, and neighbors… each one the center of someone’s world. Behind every name is a story, and behind every loss, a family forever marked by a gold star.
This podcast exists to tell those stories — to remember who they were, how they lived, and what they sacrificed. Because when we preserve their memories and honor their service, we ensure that the true cost of freedom is never forgotten.

  • 1LT Charles Samuel Huppmann, US AAC, KIA Jan. 23, 1944
    2026/05/25
Like many young Americans of his generation, Charles Samuel Huppmann's future changed dramatically as war spread across the globe. When he registered for the draft in 1941, he was living in Baltimore and working for the Shipbuilding Division of Bethlehem Steel. But with the nation moving closer to war, Charles chose a different path. On October 31st, 1941 — just weeks before Pearl Harbor — he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces.
He volunteered for Air Cadet training and was sent through a rigorous series of programs in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona. In September 1942, after completing fifteen weeks of navigation training at the Army Air Forces Navigation School in Hondo, Texas, Charles earned his commission as a second lieutenant and became a navigator aboard heavy bombers.

  • 1LT Charles Robinson Bowman, JR., KIA March 29, 1944
    2026/05/25
The story of First Lieutenant Charles Robinson Bowman, Jr. comes to an end far from the dairy farm he built in Maryland, and far from the halls of Princeton where his future once seemed so certain.

He was part of a generation that left ordinary lives behind — farmers, students, sons, brothers — and crossed an ocean into a world at war. From the hills of North Africa to the mountains of Italy, Charles and the men of the 34th Infantry Division endured some of the hardest fighting of the Second World War.
At Anzio, on March 29th, 1944, Charles gave his life in that struggle. He was only twenty-eight years old.
