The weekly celebration of animals and the humans who love them!

Join me each week (and sometimes twice a week!) as we deep-dive into incredible true stories from across the world and throughout history. Sometimes it's cute and wholesome, other times educational, and, frankly, sometimes the stories we cover are downright heart-breaking. But I promise you it's always a good time! Whether you want to discover forgotten stories from history, learn about science & conservation, dive into a spooky unsolved mystery, or just listen to some light-hearted animal tales, if you're an animal lover you'll find something for you here!

Plus, 100% of money made through this podcast goes directly to animal sanctuary The Little Rescue Zoo, so just by listening to the show, you're also helping us to rescue animals in need, which is pretty cool (if I do say so myself!)

  • History's goodest boys: The heartwarming story of Bummer and Lazarus
    2026/06/25

In the 1860s, two stray dogs became unlikely celebrities in the US city of San Francisco thanks to their uniquely strong bond. They would go on to become so beloved by local residents that they were officially declared to be the property of the city, and laws were changed to ensure their safety. Honestly, their story is one of the cutest I've done, and I loved being able to share it with you!

Original air date: 2nd July 2024

Important note: Unfortunately I wasn't able to import my show when I was switching hosting platforms, and as a result I'm having to re-upload my podcast from the start. Because of that, these early episodes are not indictive of the show's current quality - both in terms of the equipment used and my own skills as a writer & presenter - so apologies for that! Hopefully before too long I'll have caught up to my current output. • Meet Wisdom, the bird old enough to be your grandma!
    2026/06/23

At over 70 years old, Wisdom the laysan albatross is the oldest wild bird in the world, and she's still going strong to this day. She has a pretty incredible story and has completely rewritten everything experts thought they knew about her species. And yes, this is the episode I was working on when I got sidetracked by laysan albatrosses and made the bonus minisode for Pride month!

  • The hilarious hoax of Pierre Brassau
    2026/06/18

In the 1960s the art world was abuzz with discussion of a brand new star on the scene, Pierre Brassau. Hailing from France, Pierre was an up-and-coming abstract artist whose work was taking Europe by storm... but there would turn out to be a lot more to this story than a few cool paintings, and in this week's episode of the Animal Nerd Podcast we delve into the truth behind one of the art world's most hilarious hoaxes.
