  • Ari Mahler, RN: Choosing Compassion in the Face of Hate | The ER Nurse Who Saved a Mass Shooter
    2026/06/29
What does it truly mean to care for another human being? Would you still choose compassion if the person lying in front of you had just committed an unimaginable act of violence? In one of the most profound conversations ever featured on The Care2Grow Show, Dr. Larry Arbeitman sits down with registered nurse Ari Mahler, RN whose actions following the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue shooting became an internationally recognized case study in medical ethics. As the trauma nurse in the emergency department, Ari was tasked with saving the life of the gunman responsible for murdering eleven innocent worshippers—including members of the very community he belonged to. His decision to provide compassionate, unbiased care sparked worldwide discussion after his viral essay, I Am the Jewish Nurse, and is now taught in medical and nursing schools around the world. But this conversation goes far beyond one extraordinary day. It's about the calling of healthcare. It's about choosing humanity over hatred. It's about discovering why compassion isn't weakness—it's one of the greatest strengths a healthcare provider can possess. In This Episode You'll Discover • The extraordinary story behind the Tree of Life Synagogue tragedy • What it felt like to treat the man responsible for the shooting • Why compassion is an action—not simply an emotion • The ethical responsibility healthcare providers carry, even in impossible circumstances • How empathy shapes patient outcomes and provider resilience • Why Ari believes the healthcare system is broken—and where change must begin • The emotional toll emergency medicine takes on providers • How one social worker changed the course of Ari's life • Why every patient deserves to be treated like someone you love • The power of choosing love over hate Key Moments 00:00 – Introducing one of healthcare's most extraordinary ethical stories 03:30 – The morning of the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting 07:30 – Becoming "The Jewish Nurse" 12:00 – Why Ari chose nursing after a life-changing personal experience 20:00 – Treating the mass shooter 27:00 – "I didn't see evil—I saw confusion." 32:00 – Writing the viral essay I Am the Jewish Nurse 39:00 – Why healthcare systems often make compassion more difficult 47:00 – How one act of compassion became medical ethics curriculum 54:00 – Lightning Round: What care really means About Ari Mahler, RN Ari Mahler is a Registered Nurse based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and currently serves as the Director of Staff Development and Infectious Disease Prevention at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Before stepping into leadership, Ari spent much of his career working in emergency medicine, where he cared for patients during some of the most critical moments of their lives. Following the 2018 Tree of Life Synagogue shooting, Ari's reflections on treating the gunman while remaining faithful to his professional and ethical calling gained international attention. His essay, "I Am the Jewish Nurse," has since been included in medical and nursing textbooks and is taught in healthcare ethics curricula around the world. Ari graduated Summa Cum Laude from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and also holds a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maryland. Outside of healthcare, he is a certified CPR and Basic Life Support Instructor for the American Heart Association and enjoys spending time with his dog, his cat, and riding his motorcycles—despite his parents' continued disapproval.
