He is a diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology with subspecialty certification in Pain Medicine. He serves on the editorial boards of Pain Practice and Pain Physician. He is the past-president of the Texas Pain Society and past-chair of the Board of Examination for the World Institute of Pain. He has authored or co-authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles, and has presented nationally and internationally on various subjects in interventional pain medicine.     Dr. Azeem completed his undergraduate education at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and graduated from medical school, earning his Doctor of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine. After that, he completed an internship at Medstar Harbor Hospital Center in Baltimore and a residency at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Washington, DC, where he was the chief resident. After filling a faculty position at Medstar Georgetown University as a musculoskeletal medicine specialist, he went on to complete an ACGME interventional pain fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, under the guidance of internationally renowned pain physician Dr. Frank J.E. Falco.

  • EP148 - Treatment Options for Epilepsy - Dr. Ahmed Raslan

    Dr. Ahmed Raslan, a board-certified neurosurgeon, discusses treatment options for people suffering from epilepsy.


    There are a number of different treatment options available for people with epilepsy, with the most common being medication. In some cases, surgery may be an option where surgery can be used to remove the part of the brain that is causing the seizures.

    Dr. Raslan also discusses the risks and benefits associated with different types of epilepsy surgeries.


    Other possible treatments for epilepsy include:

    • Ketogenic diet
    • Vagal nerve stimulation
    • Deep brain stimulation

    Dr. Raslan is a professor of neurological surgery, managing patients with a range of neurosurgical disorders. His practice focuses on epilepsy surgery; brain mapping for tumors and epilepsy, which often involves awake craniotomy; surgery for chronic and cancer pain (trigeminal neuralgia, spinal pain and many other chronic pain syndromes); hydrocephalus; and movement disorders.Dr. Raslan's research focuses on cerebral cortical physiology and cognitive decoding. He is particularly focused on developing and testing newer high-resolution neural biointerfaces for the brain and spinal cord and decoding cognitive processes such as memory encoding, language and number cognition. Additionally, he studies nociception (pain detection) and pain modulation, pathophysiology of trigeminal neuralgia, outcomes of functional neurosurgery, functional localization using intraoperative and extraoperative mapping, surgical education and operative efficiency.
