Jordan sits at the crossroads of ancient empires, a land where Nabataean merchants, Roman legions, Byzantine monks, and Islamic caliphs all left their mark. This series traces the full arc of Jordan's history — from the Edomite and Moabite kingdoms of the Bronze Age, through the rise of Petra as a Nabataean powerhouse, to its incorporation into the Roman Empire as Arabia Petraea. We explore the Byzantine era with its desert castles and mosaic churches, the Umayyad and Abbasid periods that made the region a hub of trade and pilgrimage, and the Crusader and Ayyubid struggles that shaped its castles. Later episodes cover the Ottoman centuries, the Great Arab Revolt, the British Mandate, and the creation of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Lucas and Luna guide listeners through the strategic importance of the King's Highway, the Dead Sea scrolls, the 1994 peace treaty with Israel, and Jordan's modern role as a regional stabilizer. We ask: how did this small territory become a key player in Middle Eastern politics, and what does its layered past tell us about identity, power, and survival? #JordanHistory #NabataeanKingdom #Petra #ArabiaPetraea #KingHussein #GreatArabRevolt #DeadSea #UmayyadCaliphate #CrusaderCastles #AyyubidDynasty #ByzantineEmpire #OttomanEmpire #BritishMandate #HashemiteKingdom #PeaceTreaty1994 #MiddleEastHistory #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo© 2026 Fexingo. • Jordan's 1999 Succession: Abdullah II and the Peace Process Gamble
    2026/06/08
Episode 84 of The History of Jordan examines the dramatic transfer of power from King Hussein to his son Abdullah II in 1999, a succession that reshaped the kingdom's future. We explore the last-minute change of heir, replacing Prince Hassan after decades as crown prince, and the immediate challenges Abdullah faced: a stalled peace process with Israel, economic strains, and the need to balance Jordan's treaty with Israel against public anger. The episode covers the Wadi Araba Treaty's aftermath, Abdullah's early efforts to reform the economy and military, and his handling of the al-Aqsa Intifada in 2000. We also discuss King Hussein's return from cancer treatment, his final political acts, and the symbolism of his funeral. This is a story of dynastic survival, regional diplomacy, and a young king's gamble on peace in a volatile Middle East. #Jordan #KingHussein #AbdullahII #Hashemite #WadiAraba #PeaceProcess #Succession #MiddleEast #1999 #Hassan #AlAqsaIntifada #IsraelJordan #Amman #Monarchy #History #FexingoHistory #Podcast #MiddleEastHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

  • Jordan's 1999 Succession: Abdullah II and the Peace Process Gamble
    2026/06/08
When King Hussein returned from cancer treatment in 1999, he shocked the world by changing his successor from his brother Hassan to his son Abdullah, a former special forces commander with little political experience. This episode explores the drama of that succession, the political calculations behind it, the tensions within the Hashemite family, and how Abdullah II inherited a kingdom balancing between Israel, the Palestinians, Iraq, and a struggling economy. We discuss the role of Queen Noor, the influence of the military establishment, and the early challenges Abdullah faced, including the 2000 al-Aqsa Intifada and the 2003 Iraq War. How did an untested king navigate Jordan's most delicate diplomatic tightrope? And what did his father's final letter to the nation reveal about the monarchy's future? #Jordan #KingAbdullahII #KingHussein #Hashemite #Succession #PeaceProcess #Amman #QueenNoor #MiddleEast #1999 #ArabPolitics #OsloAccords #IsraelPalestine #IraqWar #SpecialForces #Monarchy #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo

  • The Moabite Stone: Jordan's Longest Lost Inscription
    2026/06/07
In 1868, a Bedouin guide showed a German missionary a black basalt slab near Dhiban, Jordan. The stone, three feet high, bore a 34-line inscription in the Moabite language — a Canaanite dialect closely related to Hebrew. It recorded King Mesha's rebellion against the Kingdom of Israel after the death of Ahab, an event mentioned in 2 Kings chapter 3. A dispute over the stone led locals to heat and crack it with water, shattering it into dozens of fragments. Through a squeeze made on site and patient reconstruction, scholars recovered 669 of perhaps 700 original letters. The Mesha Stele, as it is now called, remains the longest Iron Age inscription ever found in the Levant outside the Hebrew Bible. It contains the earliest known extra-biblical reference to the House of David, though the reading of that line is contested. This episode traces the discovery, destruction, and decipherment of the Moabite Stone, and what it reveals about the politics, religion, and writing of ancient Jordan. #MoabiteStone #MeshaStele #KingMesha #Dhiban #Moab #IronAge #Canaanite #PaleoHebrew #HouseOfDavid #BiblicalArchaeology #CharlesClermontGanneau #Squeeze #Louvre #AncientJordan #KingdomOfMoab #FexingoHistory #History #Archaeology Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
