In October of 2004, I spent a long weekend at a friend's family cabin near Gallows Pond, a dark, weedy stretch of water outside the town of Raven's Mill. The cabin was old, the kind of place where every floorboard groaned and the cellar door was kept padlocked. On the second night, a woman came walking up the gravel drive—dressed in a white nightgown, barefoot, her hair plastered to her face. She said she lived across the pond. She said her name was Anna. And she asked me to come see the thing that was living in her basement.
