  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 11: Joseph Woll is Traded, Jim Hiller is Hired, and Darren Raddysh Comes Home
    2026/06/19

This might be the most chaotic week of the offseason yet — and we have a lot to sort through.

We start with the shocking Joseph Woll trade (1:15). We break down why the Leafs cashed in on his peak value now, what it says about their belief in Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby, and how it clears a path for Artur Akhtyamov. Plus, we dive into the return: why we're fascinated by the high-upside bet on the fiercely competitive Emil Andrae and how his puck-moving game brings a much needed element to the team's blue line.

From there, we pivot to the bench and the official Jim Hiller hiring (25:10). We admit to our initial overreaction and explain how his progressive background with video tracking, his power-play success with Auston Matthews, and his stingy defensive structures in LA won us over.

Then, we tackle the absolute blockbuster news of the morning: the Darren Raddysh sign-and-trade (54:40). We look at how bringing a top-pair defenseman home from Tampa makes all the sense in the world. We break down his elite puck skills, his absolute rocket of a power-play shot, and why a max-term megadeal is a risk the Leafs had to take.

    Let's get into it.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 10: Trading Morgan Rielly, Vincent Trocheck, and the Sean Durzi Rumour
    2026/06/15

This might be the most chaotic week of the offseason yet — and we have a lot to sort through.

We start with the coaching search (1:30), which continues to be one of the strangest processes we've ever tried to follow. Pavelski and Roy are the only confirmed names, everything else is speculation, and we get into our theory on why the Leafs went from Carle to Laviolette to Pavelski — and why we think Pavelski might actually be the right long-term fit for where this team is at.

From there, we dig into the Morgan Rielly situation (22:00). We break down what a realistic trade could look like, including a Rielly-for-Jake DeBrusk scenario with Vancouver, why San Jose continues to be the most talked-about destination, and whether we'd be surprised if he's still a Leaf come September.

We also take on two big swing trade targets — Dylan Larkin (36:40) and Vincent Trocheck (45:10) — and explain why one fits this team perfectly and the other might not be the right fit at all, despite all the smoke.

Then there's Jordan's Sean Durzi trade rumour (55:27). We share the DM that got our attention, dig into why Utah might actually be ready to move on from him, what he'd bring to the Leafs, and what a realistic trade framework could look like.

We close things out the only way we know how — by revisiting the Matthew Knies trade that was submitted at 3:01 PM, and just how perfectly it sums up the entire Brad Treliving era (1:10:25).

    Let's get into it.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 9: Listener Trade Proposals
    2026/06/08

A slightly different one this week.

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, I work through over 40 listener-submitted trade proposals, reacting to each one, grading them on realism and how much I like the player, and giving my honest take on whether the Leafs should actually be making these moves.

We cover everything — Morgan Rielly destinations, the Elias Pettersson swap, Mason McTavish to Toronto, Olen Zellweger, Michael Kesselring, Dougie Hamilton, Zach Werenski, Barrett Hayton, and a whole lot more. Some of these are genuinely great ideas. Some are not. All of them are worth the conversation.

Michael is back next week, and we'll get into some deeper offseason discussions — trade targets, coaching updates, and everything in between.

Apologies in advance for a somewhat clunkier solo episode while Michael is still away. That said, the trade proposals you all sent in were genuinely outstanding, and this was too much fun not to do.

Thanks to everyone who sent in a proposal. This is exactly what we want more of. Have a great week.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 8: Judd Brackett's Hiring + AMA Episode!
    2026/06/01

This week is a little different as Michael (LeafZone44) is away on vacation, so Jordan (Willyston Riellander) takes the opportunity to answer listener questions in the first Leafs Lab AMA episode.

Before getting into the mailbag, we break down the Leafs' hiring of Judd Brackett and why bringing one of hockey's most respected talent evaluators to Toronto could be one of the most important moves of the offseason.

    Topics covered include:

    • Judd Brackett's hiring and what it means for the future of the organization

    • The Leafs coaching search

    • Jeff Halpern as a potential coaching candidate

    • Which Marlies have the best chance of making the roster next season

    • How Toronto should remodel its defence corps

    • The search for a second-line centre

    • Offseason priorities and roster construction

    • Buy-low trade and free-agent targets

    • Mats Sundin, Ivar Stenberg, and the 2026 NHL Draft

    • Power-play deployment with Gavin McKenna

    • Morgan Rielly's future

    • Bowen Byram and other realistic trade targets

    • Players Jordan was most right and most wrong about

Also, apologies in advance for the slightly clunkier and shorter episode. Solo podcasts are a different challenge, but hopefully this gives everyone something to listen to while we wait for Michael's return.

Keep an eye out for the Trade Proposals Teaser this week!

As always, thank you for listening, supporting the show, and sending in questions. Let us know what you thought of the AMA format and whether you'd like to see more episodes like this in the future.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 7: Projecting Matthews' 2026-27, David Carle's Candidacy, and Who Stays and Who Goes
    2026/05/26

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we kick things off with a Matthews situation update — the latest Friedman reporting, what the Zoom call with Chayka and Sundin means, and what he actually needs next season to get back to his 60-goal self (0:45).

We take a moment to wish Max Domi nothing but the best following his surgery news — and then have an honest conversation about what it means for his future with the team (28:45).

From there we get into the coaching search, breaking down David Carle's candidacy and where things stand with the rest of the field (36:10). Then we shift our attention to the Marlies' playoff run and whether any player from that group can make the jump to the NHL (45:30).

We close things out with a full roster breakdown, playing a game of 'Who stays, Who goes' (57:18).

The pieces are moving. Let's get into it.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 6: Berube's Fired, Coaching Candidates, and Generational Players
    2026/05/18

Berube is gone — and it wasn't even close.

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we start with a full breakdown of the Berube firing, why the case against him was overwhelming, and why so many Toronto-based insiders got it so wrong for so long. From there we get into what the firing tells us about Pelley, Rogers, and the direction of this new front office.

Then it's on to the coaching search. We make the case against Bruce Cassidy, before diving deep into the two candidates we're most excited about: Manny Malhotra and Jay Woodcroft. We break down their backgrounds, their philosophies, and why either one could be exactly what this franchise needs heading into a new era.

We then move onto a fun one — how many generational players has the NHL actually produced since 2005?

We close things out with the Brandon Pridham firing, what it means for the front office structure going forward, and why Chase Glasberg could be the next big name to join the Leafs organization.

Berube's out. The search is on. Let's get into it.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 5: The Draft Lottery, Gavin McKenna, and the Auston Matthews Situation
    2026/05/11

The draft lottery changed everything — and we have a lot to unpack.

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we kick things off with our reactions to the Leafs' lottery win and the moment the 12th ball dropped (0:45), before getting into who we'd actually take first overall if we were running this team (3:06). From there, we break down the McKenna vs. Stenberg vs. Reid debate (6:25), set realistic rookie expectations for McKenna (10:59), and map out exactly how he changes the Leafs' lineup next season (21:20).

Then we shift to the elephant in the room — the Auston Matthews situation and what it all means for the future of this franchise (26:15). From there it's a deep dive into the offseason targets, including Darren Raddysh, Bowen Byram, Olen Zellweger, Barrett Hayton, and more (32:16).

We close things out with Michael's long-anticipated Nikita Kucherov take (1:14:47), the Mitch Marner discourse (1:15:48), and predictions for the week ahead (1:21:35).

The first overall pick is in hand. Now the real work begins.

  • The Leafs Lab Ep. 4: The Chayka and Sundin Era Begins
    2026/05/05

The new era of Maple Leafs hockey is officially here — and we have a lot to unpack.

On this week's episode of The Leafs Lab Podcast, we start with a full breakdown of the Leafs' press conference and the Toronto media's embarrassing performance (1:40), before diving deep into the John Chayka hiring — what it means, what the risks are, and what the best and worst case scenarios look like (8:55).

Then we turn to Mats Sundin and what his role could realistically mean for the culture of this franchise (36:35). Keith Pelley, as per usual, couldn't help himself (42:40), we get into that too.

From there, we look at what the best and worst teams in the league can teach the Leafs about the direction they need to go (46:20), before shifting our attention to the draft lottery and what's at stake for Toronto (1:03:15).

We close things out with the question of how much would a new coach actually improve this team (1:14:25) and finish with a response to Frank Seravalli's spineless tampering article (1:24:08).

The Chayka-Sundin era has officially begun. Let's get into it.
