In the summer of 2013, I spent a week in the town of Meridian, Ohio, helping my aunt clean out her childhood home after her mother passed. The house was a narrow Victorian on Sycamore Street, and in the attic I found a small brass key tied with red thread. My aunt said it belonged to Saint Lucy's Gate, a footbridge over a creek that ran behind the Methodist church. She told me the story of a girl named Eleanor, who in 1927 had gone to the bridge at midnight to meet someone and never came back. The key was found in her coat pocket the next morning, and the lock it fit was never located. I took the key to the bridge anyway, because that's what you do when you're twenty-two and you think the dead deserve an audience.
