October 2009. A Tuesday night somewhere west of Flagstaff, Arizona. I was drinking black coffee at the Rusty Nail Bar when the payphone by the restrooms started ringing. No one else was in the place except the bartender and a man in a dusty cowboy hat who never looked up from his beer. The phone rang eleven times before I answered. The voice on the other end was a girl I hadn't spoken to in seven years. She said she was calling from a payphone outside a gas station in Texas. She said she was in trouble.
