Luna recalls a night in late October 2019 when she worked late at the Harwood Medical Building, a seven-story office tower on the edge of Elkhart, Indiana. She was the last one there, locking up after a software migration. The elevator was old, a single car with a manual door and a brass indicator. At 11:47 PM, she pressed 1 for the lobby. The car stopped at 3. The doors opened onto a hallway that should not have existed — a corridor of frosted glass doors with names she did not recognize, lit by a light that was the color of old honey. She pressed the close button. The doors stayed open. A woman in a blue dress stood at the far end, her back to Luna, perfectly still. The elevator did not move again until Luna looked away.
