In October of 2017, my cousin Theo drove out to Whitaker Farm to buy a bale of hay for a fall display. The farm was closing for the season, the fields already turned under, and the only thing left standing was a scarecrow at the far edge of the corn stubble. It wore a flannel shirt and a burlap sack with no face drawn on it. Theo bought his hay, but on the way out, he noticed the scarecrow had moved. Not much—just enough that it was facing the road now, where before it had faced the tree line. He told himself it was the wind, or his eyes playing tricks in the fading light. But when he came back the next morning to return a borrowed trailer, the scarecrow was standing in the middle of the driveway, fifty yards closer to the barn. And the burlap sack had a smile cut into it. Fresh.
