  • Hickory Dickory Doom - Old Time Radio Horror
    2026/06/11

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn wind up one of the creepiest clocks in old-time radio history: Hickory, Dickory, Doom. Originally broadcast on CBS Radio Mystery Theater in 1979, and written by Bob Juhren, the story begins innocently enough when a young Pennsylvania couple purchases an antique grandfather clock at an estate sale "for a steal". The clock seems like a bargain—until it starts chiming when it shouldn't, emitting strange cold drafts, and attracting some decidedly unwelcome visitors. Before long, our unsuspecting couple discovers they've brought home something far more sinister than a family heirloom.

The cast includes Tony Roberts, Patricia Elliott, Sam Gray and Joan Shay, while host E. G. Marshall provides his trademark introduction and closing remarks, helping to make CBS Radio Mystery Theater one of radio's most beloved series. The series ultimately produced an astonishing 1,399 original episodes between 1974 and 1982.

Mary and Greg discuss the wonderfully creepy sound design, the terrific cast and the wonderful pace to the writing. So pull up a chair, lend us your ear (or ears) for Hickory Dickory Doom!

  • Gaslight - Old Time Radio Suspense
    2026/05/27

This week on The Shiver Show, Mary Labrie and Greg Flynn welcome you to step into one of the most psychologically unsettling stories ever brought to radio: “Gaslight” from Lux Radio Theatre, starring the legendary Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer.

Long before the term became a pop psychology expression, Gaslight explored the terrifying power of manipulation, deception, and psychological control. Set in Victorian London, the story follows a young woman whose charming husband gradually convinces her that she is losing her mind. Strange noises echo through the house. Objects disappear. The gaslights flicker and dim. And every time she questions what’s happening, she’s calmly told it’s all in her imagination.

Bergman is superb as Paula, bringing vulnerability and emotional depth to every scene, while Boyer delivers a chilling performance full of charm, control, and quiet menace.

Mary and Greg talk about how the title itself gave rise to the modern term “gaslighting.” Originally a stage play before becoming an acclaimed film and radio adaptation, Gaslight remains timeless because the only monster in this story is just an ordinary man.
