Both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates carried out retaliatory attacks on Iran. Neither Gulf State was in favor of the US and Israeli war on Iran, and were bombed because of US military bases on their land. The Gulf States do not trust the actions or leadership of the Trump administration. From JAPAN- The Iranian Foreign Minister is trying to drum up international support at a BRICS summit in New Delhi. Japan had a second oil tanker pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The Japanese government is subsidizing fuel prices to prevent the citizens and truckers from economic hardship. A CNN analysis shows a serious uptick in US military surveillance along the coast of Cuba. From CUBA- Mexican President Sheinbaum announced the departure of another ship carrying aid to Cuba and vowed ongoing support. Hondurasgate is a series of leaked audio files allegedly exposing US and Israeli interference in a plot with Honduras to destabilize left-leaning Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. Brazilian Gaza activist Thiago Avila returned home from an Israeli prison. The Israeli military issued new evacuation orders for residents of Southern Lebanon. The Shell Oil company has reported its highest profits in years. From FRANCE- 3 press reviews- the first is the French press on Trump meeting with the Chinese president. This week's show features stories from France 24, NHK Japan, Radio Deutsche-Welle, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr260508.mp3 (29:00) From FRANCE- First a report on the windfall profits oil companies are making as a result of the war on Iran- there are calls for a tax on the oil companies who mask their profits in international schemes. The Guardian had a long article about a British advertising company has been greenwashing the US oil industry with a billion dollar budget. 50,000 people in Tokyo protested the shift in the Japanese constitution which has a pacifist clause. From JAPAN- The leaders of Japan and Australia held a summit covering economic and military security. The UN Security Council is having a meeting about North Korea alongside a conference on the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons- a new draft of the treaty calls for safeguards against autonomous use of nuclear weapons. North Koreas constitution no longer refers to reunification with the south. Japans Industry Minister says Saudi Arabia and the UAE have agreed to cooperate with Japan to ensue stable oil supplies. From GERMANY- In Southern Lebanon Israel is attacking ambulances hospitals, and medics, using 2 to 4 consecutive strikes, often called "double tap." This week's show begins with a large segment on press freedom in Europe and the US, Iran denies Trump's claim that they are in a state of collapse, the UN hosts an update of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons treaty, and Maduro can finally begin to pay for legal representation in the US.

This week's show features stories from France 24, NHK Japan, and Radio Havana Cuba. http://youthspeaksout.net/swr260501.mp3 (29:00) From FRANCE- This week there was much news and concern about press freedom- on Press Freedom Day, both Reporters Without Borders and the Civil Liberties Union for Europe released annual surveys of the state of the press. First a review of the annual index of press freedom by country- overall the scores were the lowest since the index began in 2002. Then a press review on a report published by a far-right group in France on public media, suggesting that France 24 and other government funded sources are not neutral and should be removed from taxpayer support. Not unlike public radio and TV in the US- only France did not cancel support at this time. Then a report by the Civil Liberties Union says press freedom in Europe is under threat, journalists are receiving threats, and there are concentrations of media ownership. Not unlike in the US. Then an interview with Jonathan Day, from the Civil Liberties Union of Europe. They discuss the media being a tool shaped by politicians and the rich and powerful. Across Europe there are issues with the independence of media. In the US the press pool for the President is selected by the presidential team and anyone questioning him is subjected to humiliating criticism. Jonathan says that when media freedom goes the rest of democracy is not far behind. From JAPAN- The Japanese PM Takaichi spoke on the phone to the president of Iran about their ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz and her concern for other Japanese citizens on ships stranded in the Gulf. Trump claimed that Iran said they were in a state of collapse but Iran denied this. The head of UNICEF appealed for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the wars on Iran and Lebanon because of the number of children killed in the fighting. At the UN delegates are gathered to review the crucial Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons while several countries are discussing expanding their arsenals. From CUBA- The US Justice Department has finally agreed to allow the defense lawyers for Venezuelan President Maduro and Celia Flores to be paid by the Venezuelan government. There is an upcoming ballot initiative in California imposing a one-time tax on billionaires assets. The Iranian RedCrescent submitted evidence to the International Criminal Court documenting US and Israeli war crimes.
