In the winter of 2009, Luna met an old woman on the shoulder of Farm Road 170 near the Pecos River crossing. The woman was building a shrine from river stones and broken glass, piece by piece, every night. She said she was remembering someone who drowned there in 1934, and that the river remembered too. Luna helped her carry stones in the dark, and for a while, the lights on the far bank seemed to flicker in a pattern that was almost language. The old woman spoke of a current that pulled things sideways, that kept things. When Luna came back the next morning, the shrine was gone.
