Mick is the convenor of the Housing and Homelessness sub-group of the Social Justice Advocates of the Sapphire Coast, which since 2011 has been delivering practical relief for those sleeping rough, including by building and operating 8 crisis transitional units in the form of moveable dwellings as well as providing about 35 caravans each night. In this conversation we explore the underlying causes of the crisis - a perfect storm of natural disaster, COVID, AirBNB, economic pressures and increasing domestic violence. Mick staunchly advocates for moveable dwellings as part of the solution, but the SJA has been facing red tape at the local government level. We also discuss the environmental and social sustainability of current attitudes to housing in Australia, and Mick provides pointers as to how communities can help solve the current predicament.
