Toffs & Toolers — Episode 1: Garotting

Gather ’round, gentle listeners, and step away from the gaslight into the foggy underbelly of the nineteenth century.

Welcome to the inaugural broadcast of Toffs & Toolers, the audio-journal wherein we dissect the high-born eccentrics and the low-born scoundrels who populated the grandest, grimiest era in history.

For our maiden voyage, we cast our eyes upon a silent terror that once held the grand metropolis of London in an iron grip of absolute hysteria: The Garotte.

While it may sound to modern ears like the dramatic invention of a penny dreadful, the garotte was a weapon of terrifyingly quiet efficiency. This week, we trace its grim lineage and lawless migration onto the cobblestones of Victorian England.

We shall investigate the infamous Garrotting Panic of 1862—a winter of moral outrage when stealthy street-robbers struck from the shadows, leaving wealthy gentlemen gasping for breath and the press screaming for the return of the lash.

It is a sobering yet thoroughly captivating tale of how a silent crime created a deafening public panic.

Fear not, however, for we do not leave you entirely in the clutches of the criminal class!

This week also marks the grand unveiling of our two highly specialized, recurring diversions:

🎩 What the Dickens!A parlor game of historical gymnastics. Each week, we attempt to construct a bridge of utterly tenuous association between the grand literary moralizer himself, Mr. Charles Dickens, and some other notable Victorian character who likely wished to be left entirely in peace.

Is it a legitimate thread of historical coincidence?

Are we spinning a yarn out of thin air?

Tune in to witness the stretch.

💰 Filthy Lucre!A slot of profound misfortune for our co-host, Shaun. Every week, we strip Shaun of his modern comforts and wtch him toil with the most wretched, stomach-churning, and back-breaking occupations the Victorian era had to offer.

This week, Shaun reports back from the absolute gutter of 19th-century capitalism to explain how our ancestors scratched together a miserable living. Let us pray he has thoroughly washed his hands before handling the microphone.

So, pour yourself a measure of gin (or a respectable cup of tea), ensure your window shutters are securely bolted against the night air, and join us for a journey into the dark side of history.

YOUR HOSTS: Alex Hudson, Alex Sweetman, Mr Hugh & Shaun, Your Humble Servants.
