Useless Assumptions Episode 134 is here and we are covering everything from blockbuster NBA trades to a federal judge shutting down Nebraska's food stamp restrictions to a real conversation about what is happening to young men in this country.

We start in the NBA where the offseason is already on fire. Giannis Antetokounmpo is headed to Miami in one of the biggest trades in league history and we break down what the Heat actually got and what they gave up to get it. LeBron James is a free agent and the question of whether he follows Giannis to South Beach is on everybody's mind. Then we get into Julius Randle leaving Minnesota for Brooklyn, Ja Morant reportedly on his way out of Memphis, the Celtics looking to move Jaylen Brown and what all of this means for the direction of the league. Are we in an era of superteams again or are we watching teams like the Knicks and OKC prove you can win by building the right culture? We talk about where the NBA is headed and whether those polarizing stars that used to drive the league still exist.

The World Cup is in full swing and the USA plays Turkey tonight at 9PM. We talk about why this has been the most entertaining World Cup since 1958 with scoring up 25 percent from the last tournament. The refs are letting the game breathe instead of rewarding flopping, the VAR system has been smooth as silk and Zach makes the case for other sports to pay attention, and the hydration breaks and stoppage time have actually been working. This tournament has been must watch television.

Oklahoma won the College World Series right here in Omaha. They were 11th in the SEC heading into the postseason and went on a run that nobody saw coming.

Then Caitlin Clark is back in the news again for all the wrong reasons after another attack on the court and we weigh in.

On the local front Nebraska is directly in the middle of a national story. A federal judge in Washington D.C. on Monday struck down Nebraska's SNAP restrictions that banned soda and energy drinks from being purchased with food stamp benefits. Nebraska was the first state in the country to implement these rules back in January. The judge ruled that the USDA overstepped its authority. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and RFK Jr. both fired back calling it an activist court decision. We lay out every side of this one and let you decide.

Then we get into two bigger conversations. The movement to ban social media for kids under 16 is spreading worldwide and we talk about where America stands. Australia did it first. The UK just announced it. Five countries now have it in place. We lay out the case for it and the case against it including the question of whether age verification requirements lead us down a road we are not comfortable with.

And finally we have a real conversation about what is happening to young men in America. The workforce numbers are falling. Marriage rates are falling. Twenty percent of men ages 25 to 34 are still living at home. Suicide rates among young men remain alarming. Researchers have a name for the ones who are not working, not in school and not pursuing anything. We talk about why this is happening and what it means for communities like ours right here in Norfolk.

  • #133 USA...USA...USA
    2026/06/19

Useless Assumptions Episode 133 is here and Zach and Vance are coming in hot.

The New York Knicks are NBA Champions for the first time since 1973 and we break down the entire series game by game. From stealing home court in San Antonio in Games 1 and 2 to OG Anunoby tipping in the most iconic shot in Knicks history with 1.2 seconds left in Game 4 to Jalen Brunson dropping 45 points in the closeout win Zach and Vance get into all of it. The drought is over and New York is going crazy.

The World Cup is one week in and the USA opened with a dominant 4-1 win over Paraguay with Folarin Balogun going off and Christian Pulisic doing Pulisic things before leaving at halftime with a calf issue. We break down where Team USA stands heading into the Australia game Friday and talk about how the rest of the world is looking through the first week of the tournament.

UFC Freedom 250 happened on the South Lawn of the White House on Flag Day and Trump's 80th birthday and we have all the results. Justin Gaethje upset Ilia Topuria for the lightweight title in what might be fight of the year. Ciryl Gane knocked out Alex Pereira in the co-main. Every single fight on the card ended by knockout. Seven bouts seven finishes. And yes we talk about the foiled attack plot that has a direct Nebraska connection with an Omaha man named the ringleader behind a plan to use explosive drones and snipers to target Trump Vance Elon Musk and Netanyahu at the event.

The College World Series championship is set with Oklahoma taking on North Carolina starting Saturday in Omaha and we run through how both teams got there.

On the local front the Norfolk City Council approved an ordinance establishing the framework for an entertainment district downtown despite some pushback from council members and residents who wanted more public discussion first. We break down what the ordinance actually does and what comes next for Norfolk.

Then we get into the big national stories. The Situation Room tapes story is one of the wildest things happening in Washington right now. New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan have a book dropping June 23 called Regime Change that contains verbatim quotes from classified White House Situation Room meetings on the Iran war and the Epstein files. Vance went on The Megyn Kelly Show and said he was legitimately worried people were taping conversations which by the way is a felony. We lay out exactly what we know and what is still unknown.

Then the MLB Bible verse story. Three San Francisco Giants pitchers wrote Genesis 9 12-16 on their Pride Night caps and MLB warned them for a uniform violation. The verse they chose is the one where God creates the rainbow as a symbol of his covenant with creation after Noah's flood. The players said there was no hate behind it. MLB said it was a uniform violation. JD Vance posted Trump won we don't have to do this anymore. Senator Josh Hawley sent a letter to the commissioner demanding answers. Florida and Missouri attorney generals are threatening legal action. It is a full blown national story and we get into every angle of it.

We also touch on California pressuring public utilities to award 633 million dollars in contracts specifically to LGBT owned businesses with an LGBTQ checklist required to qualify.
