  • Walk #3 - Broadway
    2026/04/08

Exploring why stopping can be more difficult than expected when on the cusp of retirement.

With a backdrop of the wonderful Cotswold landscape and Broadway, and with metaphors galore, Peter and DAS discuss what makes 'stopping' challenging and what is 'lost' when it comes to crossing that retirement bridge.

But also, what is to be gained as well when on the other side.

All this with a bonus of some really cute lambs.

  • Guest #1 - Forced Retirement
    2026/04/02

They say that life is what happens to you whilst you are busy making other plans and in this episode, our first guest podcast, Sally MacQueen joins Peter and DAS to discussion the impact of when retirement is more forced upon you rather something you planned.

The loss of purpose, the loss of identity, and moving through the grieving process are all covered with honesty and a certain degree of rawness.

Also we discuss the disappearance of a key social community and potential isolation when your primary purpose is removed unexpectedly.

"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" is a famous quote often attributed to John Lennon in his 1980 song "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)". It highlights that life is unpredictable, unfolding in the present moment rather than according to future goals or schedules.

  • Walk #1 - Walking into Retirement (an Introduction)
    2026/03/08

Retirement today is no longer a clear-cut ending to working life, and for many professionals, it is an uncertain transition marked by loss of identity, fear of stopping, questions of purpose, and the challenge of balancing enjoyment of life with planning for a (hopeful) long future.

‘Walking into Retirement’ will address this transition, head on, in a fresh and engaging way.

The hosts, Peter and DAS, will undertake a series of walks across the UK, coastal paths, countryside trails, and other familiar UK landscapes, and using walking as both a literal framework and a metaphor for change they will talk: honestly, humorously, and thoughtfully about what retirement now means, why it differs so much from previous generations, and how people can move into it deliberately rather than abruptly.

They will share their similar and yet very different approaches and plans for this new period in their lives and speak openly about their hopes and their fears. The walks themselves will also be outlined to paint a picture for the readers.

The podcast (website and hopefully book) intends to blend lived experience together with a reflective dialogue and share practical insight without becoming prescriptive or technical as is not intended to be a financial guide or a ‘how-to’ manual, but instead, to be more of a comforting companion for readers navigating one of life’s most significant transitions.

A new unusual podcast from the hosts of 'The Squid of Despair'
