  • The Diagnosis That Changed My Life
    2026/03/16

Six years into our marriage, my husband and I were living the busy but joyful life of a young family with our three-year-old daughter. I was working as a public school librarian, and my husband had a successful career and was the primary provider for our family. Like many families, we assumed we had plenty of time ahead of us. But everything changed the night my husband suddenly became critically ill and was later diagnosed with congestive cardiomyopathy and heart failure.

In this personal episode, I share the journey that followed—becoming a caregiver while raising a young child and working full time, learning to navigate complex medical information, managing medications and treatments, and rebuilding care after moving to two different states. I also reflect on the emotional toll of chronic illness, the friends who stood by us, the strength of family support, and the faith that carried me through some of the hardest moments.

Most importantly, this experience showed me the power of health literacy. Learning to ask questions, understand medical information, and advocate within the healthcare system became essential for our family—and it ultimately shaped the work I do today to empower patients and caregivers with the knowledge they need to navigate their own healthcare journeys.
