This is an excellent, page-turning Sherlock Holmes pastiche by noted author and historian Barry Day. It explores the fascinating "what if" proposition supposing the latent return of a legendary murderer, whose "signature", left upon his victims' skillfully eviscerated bodies, alerts Holmes and Scotland Yard to his unmistakable presence anew in England. To quote the cover of this recently released book: "Sherlock Holmes meets Jack the Ripper, Oscar Wilde, and THE Woman!"

A woman's life is thrown into disarray, the object of sudden publicity, when she receives a tobacco box filled with coarse salt and . . . two unmatched human ears. Why has she, of all people, become the recipient of so ghastly a package?

When a young governess, unemployed and desperate for a position, accepts a job with a couple living in a remote country home, her positive first impressions of the man and his family begin to change. With a mixture of fear and uncertainty, she asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the increasingly disturbing events that have begun to unfold around her.

Sherlock Holmes first regards the experiences related by newly arrived visitor Violet Smith with a degree of impatience and disinterest. This solitary cyclist, however, is being shadowed by a mysterious man on a bicycle as she travels to and from her new employer's home as a music teacher. As Holmes and Watson investigate, a dark, dangerous picture begins to emerge that threatens the young lady's safety and ultimately her freedom.

This is a delightful and extremely humorous story. After the syndicate disaster, Bertie ponders what to bet on next.

The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone - In this entry from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, the master detective is on the trail of the stolen crown jewel known as the Mazarin Stone. Knowing his activity on the case makes him a target for murder, Sherlock Holmes is preparing a ruse to smoke out the suspected thief. To his surprise, however, his quarry - a renowned big game hunter - comes directly to him, and as Watson slips away to get the police, an impromptu game of cat and mouse ensues.

To avoid a scandal at a prestigious school, Holmes must determine how and by whom the answers to an extremely difficult Greek exam, which will result in the award of a scholarship, have been copied.

A young man comes to Holmes for help, fearing that the unknown forces that have brought the deaths of his uncle and father will soon visit death upon himself as well.

Hydraulic engineer Victor Hatherley arrives at 221-B in a state of hysteria, his thumb grossly amputated from his left hand. The Baker Street duo's foray into the case leads to characters and machinations even stranger and more threatening than the case's grotesque genesis.

A young, hard-up aristocrat decides to visit his wealthy relative in the hope of obtaining a loan. When he arrives at Greylands Court, he is warmly greeted by his cousin, but his hostess is strangely hostile. However, her husband urges the young man to pay no attention to her, and invites him to tour his menagerie. There he sees the star of his cousin's collection: a sleek, black Brazilian puma.

While assisting Holmes in an embezzlement case in Falmouth, Watson is called to aid Mrs. Ranstead, the survivor of a shipwreck. She and crewman Cluney were the only survivors from a ship that was transporting an ancient meteorite from St. John's to Falmouth.

The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his Jewish religious and cultural traditions, as outside influences encroach upon the family's lives. He must cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters, who wish to marry for love - each one's choice of a husband moves further away from the customs of his faith - and with the edict of the Tsar that evicts the Jews from their village.

As he follows and observes an arms smuggling operation while on undercover assignment for Scotland Yard, Chief Inspector Roderick Langham encounters Holmes and Watson from a distance at the village inn. The morning after taking the tour of an archeological dig with the talkative professor Edford, the pedant is found shot dead at the site and the Baker Street duo are on the scene.

As Dr. Watson commits to history in his journal, "... in reviewing my notes for the year 1890, I have come across a case that, while seeming at the outset to be one of the most mundane ever brought to him, had one of the most inexplicable endings that I have been privileged to record."

London 1900 and Sherlock Holmes finds himself investigating a string of murders that have one common thread -- each of them recalls one of his earlier cases. E. F. Benson's ghost story In The Tube is posited as an exposition of a vast metaphysical question that we as human beings cannot understand. Our suppositions of time and space are taken to task. This is fiction with historical significance.
