"The Snow Queen" is the classic Christmas tale from internationally revered children's author Hans Christian Andersen. The story centers on the challenges faced by two childhood friends Gerda and Kay, whose relationship is shattered when Kai is infected by dark magic and disappears, spirited up to the Snow Queen's palace in the sky.

Presented here are two holiday classics: E.T.A. "The Blue Castle" is one of the few books author L.M. Montgomery (author of the "Anne of Green Gables" series) wrote for an adult audience. It is a romantic novel set in early 20th-century Ontario, Canada, that follows the emotional and romantic awakening of Valancy Stirling, a 29-year-old spinster trapped in a stifling, judgmental family. Valancy appears trapped, living a dull, joyless life while her relatives order her about. Her only escape is her imagination, where she dreams of a beautiful place she calls the Blue Castle-a symbol of freedom, love, and happiness.

In "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes," Sir Arthur Conan Doyle attempted a feat that even the greatest criminal minds in England could not accomplish: He tried to kill off Sherlock Holmes. (And he very nearly succeeded.) Doyle's 1894 collection of short stories—which featured some of the most enjoyable tales in the Holmes canon, including "Silver Blaze," "The Musgrave Ritual" and "The Crooked Man"—concludes with what was meant to be the last Sherlock Holmes story, "The Final Problem."

On a miserable summer trip to Geneva with her future husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, poet Lord Byron and a small group of friends, writer Mary Wollstonecraft was asked to participate in a game where the guests would create a ghost story and share it with the group. Everyone told their stories, but Mary's creation surprised them all. She had conceived of the idea that would later become her best known work, a tale of horror and creation, the legendary early science fiction classic: Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus.

E.T.A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is one of the most beloved children's stories of all time and a Christmas classic. The story is the basis for the popular ballet "The Nutcracker." In the story, a young girl named Marie is given a precious nutcracker as a Christmas present by her godfather, the enigmatic Drosselmeier. When the nutcracker is broken, Marie attempts to repair it and stays up late to tend to her new toy, but when the nursery is invaded by an army of mice, the nutcracker comes to life to both drive off the mice and escort Marie to a magical land of living dolls.

"The Monkey's Paw" is the best-known work of writer W.W. Jacobs. Generally acknowledged as one of the most disturbing and brilliant works of short horror fiction ever created, the story was first published in a larger collection of scary stories released in 1902 called "The Lady of the Barge." When the story begins, we meet the White family — an older couple and their adult son — who are given a strange and mysterious talisman: the eponymous dried monkey's paw that is said to grant the owner three wishes.

Anne's once-wealthy father - widowed for fourteen years - has fallen into financial ruin and the family is forced to rent their estate and move to more modest accommodations. What's more, the family that moves in to the house is that of Captain Wentworth, who Anne rejected as a suitor years before due to his lack of prospects but who has now risen in the military ranks to become wealthy and prosperous.

On a trip to Italy, with her chaperone Miss Charlotte Bartlett in tow, Lucy encounters a Mr. Emerson and his son George.

"A Room of One's Own" began life as a pair of lectures delivered by Virginia Woolf in October 1928 at Newnham College and Girton College, women's colleges at the University of Cambridge and was published as a stand-alone book in 1929. In this brilliant examination of literature, history and gender discrimination, Woolf posits that the dearth of female writers in literature did not result from a lack of talent; it was the lack of opportunity.
