Cette nouvelle publiée en 1877 dans un recueil de trois contes entamés en 1844, peut être considérée comme une œuvre testamentaire à un double point de vue : dernière œuvre de fiction achevée par Flaubert, la question de la Foi est y omniprésente et transcende la simple humanité de ses personnages.
