Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola war ein französischer Schriftsteller, Maler und Journalist. Zola gilt als einer der großen französischen Romanciers des 19. Jahrhunderts und als Leitfigur und Begründer der gesamteuropäischen literarischen Strömung des Naturalismus. Zugleich war er ein sehr aktiver Journalist, der sich auf einer gemäßigt linken Position am politischen Leben beteiligte.

Indignado ante esta injusticia, Zola intervino con la única arma de que dispone un intelectual: la pluma. Su violento Yo acuso le valió la condena a un año de prisión y despertó reacciones desgarradas.

As a writer Zola wrote numerous short stories, essays, plays and novels. When ‘La Confession de Claude’ was published and received the attention of the police Hachette fired him. He continued to write and after his first major novel, ‘Thérèse Raquin’ (1867), Zola started the series called ‘Les Rougon-Macquart’, a carefully planned twenty-volume history of a single family under the reign of Napoléon III.
