On this episode of Inside College Soccer, host Don Williams sat down with Jack Nicholson, NCAA Division II women’s soccer coach at Mercy University, for a great conversation on recruiting, culture building, and player development in today’s college soccer landscape.
Coach Nicholson shared his coaching journey, which includes serving as both Head Women’s Soccer Coach and Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services at Mercy University. Before taking over the program, Nicholson spent four years as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s programs, helping Mercy win multiple ECC Championships. He was also a standout goalkeeper at St. Thomas Aquinas College, where he earned All-ECC honors and served in leadership roles on NCAA student-athlete advisory committees.
One of the major topics discussed was whether playing in the ECNL is truly essential for players who want to compete at the college level. Coach Nicholson provided honest insight into how college coaches evaluate talent, emphasizing that while top leagues can provide exposure, the right fit, mentality, work ethic, and development still matter most in the recruiting process.
Don and Jack also discussed the importance of team culture and getting players to fully buy into a program’s vision and standards. Nicholson explained how successful teams are built through accountability, trust, leadership, and creating an environment where players are committed to something bigger than themselves.
This episode offers valuable advice for players, parents, and coaches navigating the recruiting process and trying to understand what college coaches are really looking for beyond just club affiliations.
