He was fourteen years old when he met the man who would teach him how to sell his friends. Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. grew up in the Houston Heights — his father beat him, once fired a pistol at him, and left. His mother did what she could. When a schoolmate introduced him to Dean Corll, Henley later said:"I admired Dean because he had a steady job. He wasn't a wild drunk, got along with kids and people in general." His mother told police that Corll was "like a father to Wayne." Over the next two and a half years, Henley lured his own friends — kids he went to school with, kids he helped search for when they went missing — to Corll's apartment. A minimum of twenty-eight teenage boys were abducted, tortured, raped, and killed. Henley personally killed six of them. When asked if he feels remorse, he laughed: "I feel remorse because I'm supposed to. That's something I've tried to build in me. I don't really feel about it."

He still paints flowers in prison. He still wishes Dean could see what a good job he did.

On December 8, 1980, Mark David Chapman had already gotten the autograph. John Lennon had signed his copy of Double Fantasy on the sidewalk outside the Dakota. Chapman was overwhelmed by Lennon's sincerity — the kindness was genuine, and for a moment it was enough. Then it wasn't. He stayed on the sidewalk. He waited five hours. He fired five shots when Lennon walked back in. He stood there with The Catcher in the Rye and waited to be arrested.

As the plane cruised at twenty-two thousand feet, David Burke walked to the lavatory. On the way, he dropped a note in his supervisor's lap: "Hi Ray. I think it's rather ironical that we ended up like this. I asked for some leniency for my family, remember? Well I got none, and you will get none." "If a normal man fancied a girl, he'd naturally feel a desire to see her, to be close to her, to smell her and kiss her. To me, eating is just an extension of that."

That is Issei Sagawa — a man who shot his classmate in the back of the neck while she was reading poetry to him, consumed her body over two days, and said his only regret was that he hadn't eaten her while she was still alive. He wanted possession without destruction. The impossible Taurus wish. He was declared legally insane in France, deported to Japan, declared sane by Japanese psychiatrists, and released on a technicality. He went on to publish twenty books and write restaurant reviews. He died in 2022, a free man.

In 1998, a handwritten plea for help was found among the belongings of a dead man in Galena Park, Texas. Louis "Buddy" Musso was fifty-nine years old with the cognitive capacity of an eight-year-old. Susan Atkins followed Charles Manson because he told her she was beautiful and said he would never let her fall. She had been molested by her brother, abandoned by her father, and used by every man she had known. She needed someone to claim her. She gave him everything — including her participation in the Tate-LaBianca murders. She spent the rest of her life inCalifornia's longest-serving female inmate.

Tracey Ann Richter-Roberts got a special education student to write a fake diary implicating her ex-husband in a murder conspiracy. Then she shot him nine times and staged the scene as a home invasion. She appeared on the Montel Williams Show and was called a hero.
